The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the GES Global Engineering Services division.

This position provides management and leadership for the Corporate Engineering Commissioning and Validation team. The Corporate Engineering Services organization provides a wide range of engineering services for capital project(s), Site Engineering support, and Capital Planning / Tracking.

This position must effectively lead multi-discipline teams supporting multiple Abbott divisions in a manner that provides innovative and cost-effective facilities that meet local, site, and global policies, procedures, and Standards. This individual must establish and maintain active and appropriate communications with key management in both the Corporate Engineering organization as well as the various Abbott divisions to satisfy and meet their facility and utility project needs. Projects must be coordinated so that they are integrated with existing production and utility operations to eliminate or minimize interference with these operations and to ensure adherence to Abbott Standards and Specifications. A high degree of coordination with the Abbott Division representatives and commissioning vendors is required to ensure proper manning of their projects. This position is responsible for the commissioning of Abbott projects to ensure they meet the requirements to effectively run the facilities and equipment onsite. In addition, they will lead and provide direction to a team of 10+ global experts that have responsibility for validation of qualified systems tied to the production of product.

What You’ll Work On

  • Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.

  • Major Responsibilities: The Corporate Engineering Services organization is set up to provide a full suite of engineering resources to support multiple campuses throughout Abbott. The individual in this position must therefore be able to manage and lead a diverse set of functions including:

  • Deliver on equipment commissioning & qualification activities including scheduling, execution, and documentation of calibration, maintenance, repair, and equipment performance verification activities in utilities, facilities and infrastructure as needed by the project.

  • Typical projects supported include HVAC system replacements, chiller replacements, utility system expansions, site infrastructure improvements (roads, sewers), roof renovations, facility renovations and additions, cafeteria upgrades and other site improvements.

  • The purpose of this role is to understand, evaluate, define and lead a team of professionals in the process of overseeing and verifying all of the mechanical (HVAC), including TAB (Testing and Air Balancing), chilled water systems, plumbing, electrical, Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), fire/life safety, utility plants, Building Management Systems (BMS), process related subsystems, lighting, ...and other components of a building or industrial office and plant are designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained according to the owner’s project requirements (OPR).

  • Provide technical support for Corporate Engineering Department projects and other activities, such as, but not limited to, commissioning new construction, renovation, and existing refrigeration, HVAC, lighting and control automation systems for manufacturing, laboratory, utilities and office buildings, testing, startup and qualification, and related facilities activities. Provide guidance to other employees and outside contractors to assure a timely and correct completion of assigned activities.

  • Directs and exercises control over operational, functional, and performance phases of tests for projects and ensures that proper documentation and execution of large- scale projects is completed accordingly.

  • Understands and provides direction on the writing of technical reports and develops charts, graphs, and schematics to describe and illustrate system's operating characteristics, malfunctions, deviations from design specifications, and functional limitations. Analyzes and interprets test data and prepares technical reports for use by engineering and management personnel.

  • Provide multi-discipline input into the scheduling, test script development, designing, and planning of projects.

  • Provide necessary project engineering and leadership services to the Division Engineering staffs which do not perform their own facilities / utilities engineering. Integrate projects assigned to Corporate Engineering Services with projects being coordinated by the Global Engineering departments, which have projects in these plants.

  • Establish and maintain active communications with management in production, development, process engineering, safety and loss prevention, environmental, quality assurance, and other service groups to assure current understanding of their concerns and requirements.

  • Establish goals, and plan resources to meet their needs.

  • Support LRP Site strategy development providing key leadership for matching Site infrastructure capabilities with the varied future needs of the many Operating Divisions.

  • Maintain communications with the many potential customers in the County to properly plan resources and manage on-time service delivery.

  • Provide guidance and training for all individuals within the group to assure technical and personal development. This includes performance reviews, goal setting and growth plans, which are reasonable and can be accomplished by the individual.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil or architectural engineering or equivalent is required to provide technical expertise.

  • 10 + years experience in the medical devices, diagnostics or other related industry with emphasis in design and construction of capital projects.

  • Project Management experience required.

  • Supervisory / Management experience with budget responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Architect, ID or PE preferred.

  • Knowledge of Abbott Engineering standards

  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills

  • Strong problem solving abilities

  • Proven track record of managing projects through to completion

  • Excellent communications skills with all layers of management

The base pay for this position is $125,300.00 – $250,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
