New York University Research Associate in the Division of Science [Biology] - Dr. Shady Amin in Abu Dhabi, United States

The Marine Microbiomics Lab (https://www.marinemicrobiomics.com/) at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint a Research Associate starting January 15, 2024, to work on a fascinating NSF-funded project investigating epizoic diatoms living on marine cetaceans and turtles, and their associated bacterial consortia. Under the supervision of Dr. Shady Amin, the researcher will investigate the relationships between diatoms and bacteria that occur on the skin of marine megafauna, with the goal of understanding how these microbiomes influence the physiology and evolution of their host, and how these interactions are in turn influenced by the environment or climate change. The researcher will use cutting edge techniques to study the molecular physiology, ecology and metabolic capacity of bacterial-diatom interaction. We are looking for applicants with strong with bioinformatics and/or computational biology familiarity who have experience analyzing omics data related to marine microbes or microbiomes. Molecular lab technique, culturing and field work experience is also desired.

Applicants must have a strong publication record and a capacity to conduct independent, high-quality research. Applicants must hold a PhD in oceanography, marine biology, or a related field at the time of appointment. Primary responsibilities would include:

  • Using molecular laboratory technique and next generation sequencing to create multi-omic (genomic, amplicon and metagenomic) datasets

  • Conduct computational data analyses in one or more coding languages

  • Participate in field work to collect samples

  • Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to funding applications

  • Present research findings at scientific conferences

  • Help manage the lab environment and mentor graduate/undergraduate students engaged in related research

Our research at the Marine Microbiomics Lab focuses on studying microbial interactions between diatoms and their microbiome using a variety of omics techniques. Experience in growing phytoplankton and/or bacteria is mandatory. Experience in bioinformatics and next-generation sequencing data analysis is highly desired. Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and scientific creativity are essential.

Researchers at NYUAD have access to state-of-the-art facilities that include NovaSeq, MiSeq Illumina and ion torrent sequencing platforms, a high-computing cluster, strong metabolomics support and cutting-edge microscopy facilities (NYUAD Core Instruments (http://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/research/infrastructure-and-support/core-technology-platforms.html) ).

The terms of employment are competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children.

To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of past research accomplishments and future research interests, a transcript, and contact details of three references, all in PDF format.
