Job Description:

Our Traffic Management Center Operators play a crucial role in improving the lives of Greenville residents and visitors every day!

As a TMC Operator, you'll be at the heart of our city's traffic management efforts, helping to reduce congestion, improve safety, and enhance the overall transportation experience in Greenville.

Your work will directly contribute to reducing travel times, improving air quality, and enhancing the quality of life for our community.

In this role, you will not only respond to traffic issues as they arise but also take a proactive approach in identifying potential improvements to our traffic management systems and processes.

We're looking for a dedicated professional who can adapt quickly to changing conditions and work collaboratively to keep Greenville moving smoothly.

Job Title: Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operator - City of Greenville

Location: Greenville, South Carolina

Status: Full-time

Hours: Shifts during peak commute times and special events, with potential for expanded hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the City's traffic network using advanced technologies such as CCTV cameras, real-time data systems, and other ITS devices for real-time congestion management and traffic flow optimization.

  • Respond to and manage routine telephone calls and inquiries about the city's traffic signal system and other traffic-related matters.

  • Use the CityWorks web application to track calls, create and manage internal work orders, and generate periodic reports.

  • Identify and document events (unplanned incidents, construction, special events) that affect traffic operations throughout key city corridors.

  • Coordinate with emergency services and external organizations to create accurate and timely records of traffic events.

  • Monitor signal operations and report any issues at the signal level (e.g., communication failures, signals on flash, or coordination problems).

  • Identify and escalate safety-related issues for both motorists and non-motorized users.

  • Provide real-time status updates on ongoing traffic system events and maintain accurate event logs.

  • Compile and prepare traffic condition data for reporting, trend analysis purposes, and to be used for traffic signal retiming improvements.

  • Assist in communicating relevant traffic information to City staff for public dissemination.

  • Analyze traffic patterns and data to proactively identify potential issues and recommend solutions to improve traffic flow.

  • Stay current with emerging traffic management technologies and suggest potential implementations to improve city operations.

  • Adapt quickly to changing traffic conditions and emergency situations, making swift decisions to mitigate impacts.

  • Collaborate effectively with other TMC operators, city departments, and external agencies to ensure coordinated traffic management efforts.

  • Participate in regular debriefings and contribute ideas for improving TMC operations and procedures.

  • Attend required training events and staffing meetings.

  • Be available to perform duties during special events, weather incidents, or seasonal peaks as necessary.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of 6 months related experience in customer service, operations, or a comparable field involving public interaction and use of computer equipment

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in data entry, internet navigation, and MS Office applications

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask

  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and some holidays

  • Problem-solving skills and ability to think critically in real-time situations

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a call center, 911 dispatch, traffic management, first responder role, or delivery services

  • Familiarity with traffic management systems or GIS applications

  • Knowledge of local Greenville streets and traffic patterns

Salary Range:

$14.66 - $24.95
