About the Opportunity

The position of Supervisor, Scoping and Estimating requires an individual to be self-directed with a strong ability to lead and coordinate multiple teams supporting the creation and maintenance of project scopes and estimates for transmission line and substation capital projects. This position will support a staff of engineers, estimators, business analysts, and designers; both internal and external. This position will collaboratively report on the overall progress, accuracy, and efficiency of project scopes and estimates while advising of any issues that could impair the successful fulfillment of our FET and FEU portfolios. This position must provide sound technical support to the scoping and estimating team and other supporting FirstEnergy departments.

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]

This position can be located in Akron, Ohio, Greensburg or Reading, Pennsylvania.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading multiple internal and external teams to develop and maintain scopes and estimates for the ATSI footprint and Detailed Load Study (DLS) projects systemwide. The supervisor is expected to assign and coordinate workload to ensure individual projects are accurately planned and accounted for in the form of detailed scope, schedule, and cost.

  • Oversee a team of internal and external employees supporting the development, maintenance, visualization of scoping and estimating specific data. The compilation of this data is used to conduct in-depth strategic research and provide solutions into workload prioritization while ensuring quality and efficiency is maintained by all scoping and estimating teams.

  • Support communication and strategic alignment across business units relative to operational and project need, strategy, and continuous improvement – specifically through our portfolio, finance, and sponsor teams.

  • Comprehensively review project requirements provided by stakeholders for appropriate project definition.

  • Comprehensively review project scopes for feasibility and appropriate layout/arrangement to ensure a safe environment for transmission lines and substation personnel, contractors and the general public.

  • Facilitate and support employee growth through means of learning opportunities to assist in their understanding of construction and project scheduling practices, as well as the use of engineering standards and procedures.

  • Collaboration with external engineering consultants, vendors, equipment manufacturers, and physical contractors.

  • Researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work processes to be automated - increasing efficiencies while decreasing the risk of human error.

  • Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy as a high performing organization by practicing and demonstrating FirstEnergy core values and behaviors.

  • Participate in industry meetings to confirm FirstEnergy has a voice in the direction of industry (i.e. AACE, IEEE, EPRI, etc.).

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field; with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience required. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 12 years of direct, relevant experience will be considered.

  • Relevant experience includes experience in design engineering, project development, portfolio development, project management, and/or system operations and maintenance is preferred.

  • Previous supervisory experience is preferred but not required.

  • Demonstrated experience in planning, designing, and/or construction of transmission and substation projects to reinforce compliance of FirstEnergy engineering practices and standards, budget practices, field practices, equipment specifications, and maintenance practices.

  • Must be able to lead multiple teams to coordinate a large quantity of projects simultaneously

  • Must be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, and unforeseen problems

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain successful working relationships with employees, surrounding departments, and external partners.

  • Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers and the public.

  • Must be self-directed and not dependent on detailed instruction from others.

  • Ability to coach, counsel, and develop employees.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.

  • Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.

  • Working knowledge of applicable computer programs to fulfill job duties; include but not limited to Microsoft Office, EOS Navigator/Sage, AutoCAD, PLS-CADD, and PowerBI. OPPM, Unifier, Primavera, EcoSys, SAP, CREWS and Cascade a plus but not a requirement.

  • Ability to support numerous locations, must be willing to travel throughout the service area and to manufacturer locations, and to work extra and irregular hours.

  • A professional engineering license is preferred but not required.
