Financial Aid Advisors in the Office of Financial Aid, support student success in areas focused on customer Service (i.e. phones, lobby, and tickets), and ensure timely review and processing of Federal Student Aid and NYS Grants and Scholarships documents. The individuals will become subject matter experts for verification and all aspects of Financial Aid, compliance, Title IV funding and packaging. Advisors report to Senior Financial Aid Advisors contingent upon areas of existing knowledge. The individuals in these positions are responsible for supporting and administering all aspects of student financial aid programs, services and will provide financial counseling to students. The individuals will also work with the Student Information Systems (PeopleSoft/Oracle), companion systems, which support the university with a focus on financial aid management, scholarships, and verification (Document imaging, Ellucian StudentForms, Scholarship Manager, NSDLS, COD and other locally developed and commercial software tools etc.). The successful candidates will ideally possess general understanding of financial aid and be independent thinkers and decision makers.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Administer, support, and provide financial counseling on all aspects of financial aid.

  • Be the area expert for Financial Aid, leveraging ongoing improvement of practices through best utilization of PeopleSoft and other applications used for awarding, communicating, and tracking Financial Aid.

  • Collaborates with other Financial Aid Advisors to facilitate cross-functional training and testing as necessary.

  • Develop expertise, provide support and understand all financial aid resources and application sources (e.g., HESC, NYSFAAA, NASFAA, COD, NSLDS, NSC, other pertinent Federal Student Aid sites).

  • Develop and continue to enhance understanding of IRS tax documents, federal regulations and compliance obligations.

  • Understand the collection and analysis related to financial aid documents submitted by students and parents to assist them in making changes and submitting the correct documents.

  • Works with Student Accounts, Bursar Staff to assist in collection of student payments, confirming awards and determining course of action needed for outstanding balance.

  • Facilitates communication with Assistant Directors/Senior Associate Directors of Financial Aid and other Financial Aid Staff to ensure participation in ongoing needs and operational assessment.

  • Monitor State and Federal Financial Aid professional organizations and list-serves, SUNY Confluence and other related vendor list serves for any issues that may impact the Financial Aid Office, awarding of scholarships, compliance and business practices.

  • Assist at recruiting and other campus/external events such as Open House, High School FAFSA filing, SUNY Financial Aid Days and Orientation Events.

  • Working closely with Undergraduate Admissions to help achieve University enrollment goals.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

  • Experience must include a demonstration of attention to detail and strong communication skills.

  • Comfortable with public speaking and presenting to large groups.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task and manage priorities.

  • Competent with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in one or more integrated business application systems that support business processes, such as PeopleSoft Campus Solutions.

  • Higher education experience, especially in Financial Aid.

  • Knowledge of federal aid and NYS aid rules and regulations.
