What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated person who is passionate about building a safe and healthy work culture to join our dynamic Safety and Health Engineering team as the Engineering Program/Project Lead (EPPL) for Chemical Safety and Management.

The position requires the development, implementation, and maintenance of a high-quality technically-sound chemical safety and management program. The program has impact and visibility laboratory wide and across the NNSA/DOE complex.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop and improve corporate chemical safety program specifications, standards, and procedures using technical knowledge in the field.

  • Lead the Sandia Chemical Management Working Group.

  • Develop and lead a Sandia Chemical Safety Council.

  • Provides leadership and tactical planning to achieve long-term strategic sustainability goals of the program.

  • Perform assessments using strong technical knowledge and defined scientific practices for a wide variety of activities involving chemicals ranging from R&D laboratory work including scale up activities, to storage requirement review, to performing chemical safety hands-on training.

  • Use technical judgment built upon a strong technical background to lead members of the industrial hygiene team, identify potential risks, develop risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommend risk acceptance or avoidance for all aspects of the project.

  • Ensure Sandia’s chemical safety program is not only compliant with all laws and regulations but is also a model for the NNSA/DOE communities.

  • Work in partnership with senior leadership, mission execution organizations, other Safety and Health Engineering staff, and others as needed to ensure safety and health.

  • Collaborate with other highly trained professionals across the occupational safety and health disciplines and line management to ensure proper work hazard evaluations.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

In this role the person will have chemical safety responsibility for all Sandia sites including but not limited to Sandia NM, Sandia CA, Tonopah Test Range, and Kauai locations. Travel to remote sites occasionally unplanned.

This position requires occasionally working a modified work schedule, travel, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in chemistry or similar discipline / STEM degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant chemical safety experience; or Master of Science (MS) in chemistry or similar discipline / STEM degree and a minimum of 1-year relevant chemical safety experience.

  • Minimum of 6 years of technical program management work, including program policy development, technical review, customer communications and negotiations; implementation of program requirements; program assessment including documentation and change control actions; working within time constraints.

  • Experience with Chemical related worker safety regulations and drivers.

  • Experience with industrial hygiene/safety program development.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and higher clearances as necessary.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Chemical Hygiene Officer Certification (CHO)

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

  • Advanced knowledge of the following regulations: OSHA1910.1450 Laboratory Standard; OSHA1910.1200 Hazard Communication

  • Familiarity with American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices (ACGIH TLVs and BEIs), and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Relevant Exposure Limits (RELs)

  • Experience in the application and use of chemical safety techniques and practices in Research & Development (R&D) environments

  • Experience as a classroom instructor

  • Current DOE L-level or Q-level security clearance

  • Experience applying Process Safety Management (PSM)

  • Knowledge of vacuum and cryogen technologies (liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, etc.)

  • Understanding of OSHA regulations, ASME Codes, NFPA Codes, DOT regulations, CGA, ANSI standards and DOE/DOD Orders/standards

About Our Team:

Safety and Health Engineering provides the tools and expertise necessary to evaluate and control occupational hazards that may occur during work, while also ensuring SNL meets contractual and promulgated worker safety and health requirements. Organization 4622, Safety and Health Engineering II is responsible for a diverse set of occupational safety and health programs that includes Material Handling Safety, Fall Prevention and Protection, Explosives Safety, Aviation Safety, Chemical Safety, and Respiratory Protection, along with others.
