Alfred University Machinist-Union in Alfred, New York
The Machinist/CNC Operator, is a staff member of the Physical Plant, is responsible for proper operation and maintenance of the NYSCC machine shop. This includes accommodating the needs of NYSCC faculty, staff, and student body in terms of safety, fabrication, designing, and facilitating proper usage of the facility for curricular and research purposes. This includes the maintenance, repair, and safety of all machines and equipment housed in the machine shop division of the Physical Plant.
This position has been evaluated for compliance with the Fair Labor Stands Act and is subject to premium pay for all hours approved by supervisor and worked in excess of 40 in a payroll week.
This position/title is covered by the CSEA, Local 749 union contract. The successful candidate will be a member of the CSEA, Local 749 bargaining unit.
Salary/Rate:$21.00-$24.00, 40-hours per week, Union Grade: U9
Requirements:
Formal Education:
High School Graduate
Experience:
Five years experience as a Journeyman Machinist with experience in CNC programming, setup, and operation, and such training and certifications as the supervisor deems necessary to perform the position as described in Position Summary
Preferred Experience:
Experience working in an academic environment
Skilled in all processes of welding, including but not limited to: mig, tig, stick arc, and oxy acetylene
Experience programming, operating, and maintaining an abrasive waterjet
Experience CNC milling a variety of materials including but not limited to graphite, ceramics, plaster, and glass
Ability to lift heavy objects
Experience in problem-solving
Experience programming, operating, and maintaining 5-axis CNC milling machines
Experience with SolidWorks and Rhino CAD
Additional Knowledge:
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to communicate with faculty, staff, and students in written and spoken form
Ability to interpret and work from sketches, verbal descriptions, plans, and blueprints
Provide guidance to customers who request support for design and materials selection
Be capable of performing complex mathematical calculations, statistical calculations, and other higher mathematical operations
Possess the ability to follow all lock-out-tag processes
Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies. Ability to follow safety rules and regulations
Experience with CAD programs
Experience with Microsoft software programs

Essential Functions:

Job Responsibilities:
Machinist skilled in the operation and set up of all machining tools including but not limited to: CNC 3-axis milling machines, CNC lathes, milling machines, lathes, drill presses, surface grinders, cut off saws, sheet metal tools, and hydraulic presses
The Machinist, a staff member of the Physical Plant, is responsible for the proper use and safe operation and maintenance of the equipment and tooling in the NYSCC machine shop
Machinist must demonstrate a detailed oriented approach to work with an ability to multitask in a deadline-oriented environment
Consult, and provide assistance where required, with faculty, students, and staff on curricular projects and research contracts
Fabrication of projects and managing workflow
Oversee and facilitate access for users of the machine shop for NYSCC faculty, students, and staff use
Maintaining all the CNC equipment, manual machining equipment, sheet metal equipment, hand tools, inspection equipment, material and supplies for the job; this will entail proper service, cleaning, and necessary repairs that are within the capabilities of the Machinist
Contacting outside contractors to schedule mandatory maintenance/warranty work. Reporting all concerns and problems with the machines immediately to the DFC Director
Scheduling repairs of all machines and equipment and helping the Director o determine the condition and proper location/set-up of machines and equipment. Maintaining the Center daily to ensure the space is clean and orderly
Maintain and update machine documentation, including maintenance logs, repair records, and equipment manuals
Perform preventative maintenance on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mills, lathes, and other shop equipment
Performing additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned. The Machinist in the Physical Plant is required to be skilled in computer programming, operation, set up, and maintenance of all machining tools including but not limited to: CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, CAD/CAM, milling machines, lathes, drill presses, surface grinders, cut off saws, sheet metal tools, and hydraulic presses. The Machinist is also required to be able to recommend further development of the facility based on innovations in the field, along with the ability to remain current with advancing technologies as they apply to Digital Fabrication
Work with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the machine shop. Follow all Alfred University and OSHA policies and procedures. Coordinate hazardous waste disposal with EH&S

Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required. A respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be required. The Campus is located in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility impaired individuals.
