Salary Grade: NC04 / Salary Range: $31,200.00 - $52,813.00 - All recommended salaries are based on each applicant’s qualifying education and related experience in combination with the position’s budgeted salary. The maximum hiring rate for this position is $44,563.
This is an extended posting through December 6, 2024, for Transportation Worker I positions in Division 11, Alleghany County. Multiple Transportation Worker I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our Transportation Worker I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a Transportation Worker I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.
Work in this class primarily involves the operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State’s highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal. Work may include flagging and assisting with maintenance/repair project completion through the use of standard tools and equipment such as tractor with various attachments, curb machine, cutoff saw, dump truck, small wheel and sheep foot rollers, vibrator roller compactor, pulverizer mixer, and pneumatic tire roller; assisting paint crews, erecting road signs, and/or assisting Electronics Technicians with maintenance and installation of signals; operating hand tools for sign installation and replacement as well as dump truck, broom tractor, paint line removing machine, thermoplastic machine, trencher, and edge-line paint gun operation; vegetation control, debris removal, pushing snow, tractor with various attachments and mower operation, dump and flatbed truck operation, assisting in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance. Work in this class may include assisting with carpentry, welding, steel fabrication or concrete work activities. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.

Additional Expectations:
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements

Highway Maintenance: Department responsible for maintenance of highway assets such as pavement, drainage pipe and structures, ditches and removal of hazards from roadways, clearing roads during inclement weather such as snow and other severe weather events. Operating various hand tools and mechanized equipment in the maintenance of pavement, pipe installation, shoulder, and ditch maintenance. Assist in installing work zone traffic control and flagging traffic as required.
Roadside: Department responsible for seeding and mulching shoulders, spraying herbicide, etc. The duties within the Roadside Environmental Unit may consist of but not limited to operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, manual labor, seeding and mulching, plant bed maintenance, herbicide application and some snow and ice removal.
Traffic Services: Perform manual and equipment operational work in erecting and maintaining highway signs. Operate sign truck, VMS boards and other equipment related to signing and traffic control. Operate paint machines, trucks and other equipment related to pavement markings. Establish and maintain traffic control, including flagging duties, for paint operations. Perform routine maintenance and safety checks and is subject to occasional emergency duties.
Bridge Maintenance: Bridge Maintenance work is technical in nature and comprised of State- owned Bridges (consisting of concrete, metal and timber structures), culverts and Non-NBIS pipes (54" and greater in diameter). You should be somewhat familiar with and/ or able to learn: carpentry skills, torch cutting/ welding, utilize small hand tools and power tools, a wide variety of machinery operation and the ability to work in a close team environment consisting of a 5 to 7 person crew
