Job Summary & General Information
Under general direction of a Parks Supervisor II, leads, trains, oversees, and participates in the more complex and difficult work of a crew engaged in park operations, the maintenance, repair and renovation of parklands, sport and recreation facilities, equipment and buildings. Sets priorities and directs the work of assigned staff on a project or day-to-day basis. Verifies the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
This is a non-exempt position.
Overview of Duties and Responsibilities
Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. Leads and participates in the work of a crew engages in park operations, the maintenance, repair and renovation of parklands, sport and recreation facilities, equipment and buildings.
Operates and troubleshoots equipment problems.
Monitors work in progress at the work site; provides technical assistance to crews and directs corrections and modification as appropriate.
Estimates materials needed and secures tools and equipment required for assigned jobs.
Maintains inventory of parts and supplies, cleans and maintains shop, tools, and equipment.
Provides input on employee evaluations.
Responds to questions or complaints from the public.
Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any safety issues/concerns to supervisor.
Assists in the daily preparation of City ball fields for utilization in season by grading infields, dragging fields, lining fields, packing mounds, edging infields, chalking base paths and turf repairs.
Operates parks equipment such as packing machine, backhoe, loader, tractor, dragging machine mower, and related maintenance vehicles.
Provides training for work crews in the use of equipment and tools needed on various jobs.
Depending on assignment, operates tractor and equipment to drag horse arenas, sets up jumps and performs other duties specific to the Equestrian Center when necessary.
Oversees and performs numerous landscaping tasks; watering, planting, weeding, fertilizing grass and flowers, trimming hedges and laying/spreading mulch.
Moves trucks and heavy equipment, and directs traffic around construction sites.
Maintains records and logs on a daily basis, which indicates personnel and equipment utilization.
Ensures the completion of work projects and assignments, checking for errors and confirming adherence to specific City work-related safety procedures and policies.
Communicates with the Parks Supervisor II to provide updates of project status and/or problems.
Assists other lead maintenance technicians and other divisions when necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Operations, services, and activities of a parks maintenance program.
Basic principles of supervision and training.
Practices of assigning and reviewing the work of others.
Plant and turf pests and diseases.
Proper and effective use of a variety of tools, equipment and materials used in park maintenance.
Basic principles and practices used in carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
Mechanics of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
Methods and techniques of planting and caring for turf areas, trees, shrubs, and plants including proper pruning methods.
Methods and techniques of groundskeeping including mowing and fertilizing.
Methods and techniques of applying herbicides, fungicides and pesticides.
Safety precautions in the use and maintenance of power mowers and other equipment.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.
Ability to:
Lead, organize, train, review, and participate in the work of park maintenance staff.
Inspect the work of others and maintain established quality control standards.
Train and instruct others in proper work methods and techniques.
Operate park maintenance equipment including power tools, mowers, commercial trucks and backhoe.
Perform a variety of routine building maintenance tasks including carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Competently care for plants, shrubs, turf, and trees including properly watering and fertilizing.
Read and interpret plans and diagrams.
Repair fences, playground equipment, and other facilities.
Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
Work independently and assume responsibility for an assigned route.
Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
Operate and make minor repairs to vehicles, equipment, and power tools.
Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Safely and accurately, perform chemical application functions.
Respond to public inquiries and requests.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Operate a personal computer utilizing standard software such as Microsoft Office and some specialized software and standard equipment.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work and contribute to a cooperative team effort.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.
High School diploma or GED equivalency; additional specialized course work in parks maintenance and construction or a related field is desirable.
Three years of experience in park or grounds maintenance, construction or landscaping, including one year of lead or supervisory experience.
Possession of a valid Georgia Pesticide Applicator's license is desirable.
Must be willing to work varying hours, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays assigned.
Possession of a valid Georgia Class C driver's license.
Physical Demands
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in outside areas in all weather conditions, which may include wind, rain and other elements. Continuous walking, reaching and handling; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling and crouching; reaching at and above shoulder height; pushing/pulling, twisting at waist; strong power or pinch grasp; upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; pushing/pulling of objects up to 20 pounds. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling and fingering of objects and equipment; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds; lifting and pushing/pulling of objects over 100 pounds with assistance only.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read printed documents and to operate equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Medical: 2 High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) options (HRA and HSA) with lower monthly costs. Dental: no deductibles. Coverage includes preventive, basic, major restorative, and child orthodontia. Retirement Health
Medical Coverage: retirees (age 55+ and 10+ yrs. of service) may continue individual coverage up until Medicare eligibility at age 65. Retirement
Defined Contributions 401(a): City contributes 10% of employee's annual base pay. Vested benefit accrued at 20% a year, with full vesting after 5 years of service. Deferred Compensation (457) and Matching Contributions: employees may elect to participate at any time. After 1 year of continuous employment, City matches employee's contributions, up to 5%.

Tuition Reimbursement
