Job Summary & General Information

Under general direction of the Parks Supervisor II, performs a variety of general maintenance in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks and/or other City areas; and operates and maintains specialized equipment related to assignment. Depending on assignment, positions in this classification may have primary responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of designated parks or other recreational/City facilities; or the operation of specialized equipment in the maintenance of City park turf areas.

Overview of Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Performs a variety of grounds keeping duties which include litter control, ball field preparation, Equestrian arena preparation, and janitorial duties as needed.

  • Operates parks equipment such as tractor, backhoe, loader, dragging machine, mower, and other related maintenance vehicles.

  • Follows all safety guidelines in operating equipment; ensures work completed meets applicable codes and regulations.

  • Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; adjust and maintain timers and controllers, repair sprinkler heads and lines; locate and repair water breaks, refer problems to higher level park maintenance staff as required.

  • Processes work orders and maintain a daily log of all work and repairs performed.

  • Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and upkeep of the buildings within the park system.

  • Performs a variety of duties for the set up/take down of special events.

  • Communicates with co-workers, immediate supervisor, other City personnel, and the public in order to provide assistance, receive instructions, exchange information, and complete daily job related activities.

  • Depending on assignment, operates tractor and equipment to drag horse arenas, sets up jumps and performs other duties specific to the Equestrian Center when necessary.

  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services, and activities of a park's maintenance program.

  • Plant and turf pests and diseases.

  • Proper and effective use of a variety of tools, equipment and materials used in park maintenance.

  • Mechanics of irrigation and sprinkler systems.

  • Methods and techniques of planting and caring for turf areas, trees, shrubs, and plants including proper pruning methods.

  • Methods and techniques of groundskeeping including mowing and fertilizing.

  • Methods and techniques of applying herbicides and pesticides.

  • Safety precautions in the use and maintenance of power mowers and other equipment.

  • Principles and practices of record keeping.

  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

  • Pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations.

Ability to:

  • Perform semi-skilled and skilled park maintenance work.

  • Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment, including mowers.

  • Perform heavy manual labor.

  • Competently care for plants, shrubs, turf, and trees including properly watering and fertilizing.

  • Repair fences, playground equipment, and other facilities.

  • Work independently and assume responsibility for an assigned route.

  • Maintain records neatly and accurately.

  • Operate and make minor repairs to vehicles, equipment, and power tools.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.

  • Safely and accurately perform chemical application functions.

  • Respond to public inquiries and requests.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work and contribute to a cooperative team effort.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency.

  • Must be willing to work varying hours, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays assigned.

  • Possession of a valid Georgia Class C driver's license.

Physical Demands

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in outside areas in all weather conditions, which may include wind, rain and other elements. Continuous walking, reaching and handling; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling and crouching; reaching at and above shoulder height; pushing/pulling, twisting at waist; strong power or pinch grasp; upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; pushing/pulling of objects up to 20 pounds. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling and fingering of objects and equipment; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds; lifting and pushing/pulling of objects over 100 pounds with assistance only.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read printed documents and to operate equipment.
