Anatomic Pathology Technician

Position Description:

Prepare cadavers for instruction, assist in instruction and evaluation of students, provide support in necropsy laboratories, and support the anatomical preparator. Major/Essential Functions:

  • Promote the mission of Texas Tech University to all faculty, staff, students, and the community at large.

  • Assist with the preparation and performance of necropsies and anatomic pathology laboratories. This includes handling, euthanasia, and subsequent tissue preservation.

  • Manage cadaver receiving, logging accompanying receiving paperwork and disposal activities.

  • Maintain and utilize laboratory equipment (including, but not limited to, band saw, Stryker saw, hoist, etc.).

  • Utilize methods for preparation of teaching and diagnostic specimens including, but not limited to, fresh, fixed, dried, refrigerated, or frozen tissues and fluids for gross anatomy laboratories.

  • Request work orders.

  • Assist the pathologist(s) in the development of course materials.

  • Maintain the day-to-day function of the anatomic pathology workspaces (laboratory, coolers, etc.), set up for instruction and provide technical support when needed.

  • Coordinate schedules.

  • Provide support in other teaching laboratories of the school as required.

  • Assist with management of and adherence to laboratory protocol and safety compliance. Conduct routine safety inspections for the anatomic pathology workspaces.

  • Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory and standard operating procedures.

  • Mix and restock of solutions needed for the laboratory operations.

  • Assist in assessments.

  • Ability to work evening and/or weekend hours, as necessary.

  • Additional duties may be assigned on a case-by-case basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge in Biology.

  • Routinely lift 50 pounds or less independently.

  • Perform basic equipment maintenance.

  • Efficient time management skills.

  • Excellent safe and clean work skills.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other SVM staff, faculty, students, and the public.

  • Working knowledge of computers and basic programs such as Word and Excel.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to foster the Core Values of the School of Veterinary Medicine.

  • Ability to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for your area.

  • Establish work area cleaning and safety protocols to ensure a safe working and teaching environment.

  • Licensed or license-eligible graduate of an AVMA licensed veterinary technician program.

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related discipline.

  • Experience with animal cadaver handling and necropsy procedures.

  • Experience with bandsaws and hoists systems.

  • A background in animal science, zoology, or farm animal husbandry.

  • Previous laboratory experience.

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and compliance.

  • Ability to drive and operate a pickup and gooseneck trailer.
