Mary Greeley Medical Center Nuclear Medicine Technologist in Ames, Iowa

  • Position Summary

  • Under direction: prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures and related work as required. Nuclear Medicine Technologists ensure all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.

  • Position Responsibilities

  • Unit Specific Position Responsibilities

  • Instructs the patient about the exam including: introduction of staff present with position title, details of the exam, duration of exam and appreciation of the patient.

  • Prepares radiopharmaceuticals for administration to patients.

  • Supervises students as assigned.

  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

  • Performs other assigned duties.

  • Documents and maintains data on patient’s electronic and paper record.

  • Assures safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families, visitors, and staff.

  • Participates and maintains quality improvement initiatives to promote positive patient outcomes.

  • Assists patient, families, and visitors with various needs and utilizes specific communication tools to enhance customer service.

  • Starts and/or uses I.V. lines.

  • Performs imaging procedures.

  • Explains Nuclear Medicine procedures to patients and family.

  • Prepares Imaging Systems for procedures.

  • Assists in preparing and maintaining records and reports.

  • Evaluates quality of procedures and prepares the images and supporting documents for the Radiologist.

  • Assists the Radiologist or Radiation Oncologist in therapeutic application of radio-pharmaceuticals.

  • Assists the Radiology Nurse in cardiac stress tests.

  • Transfer patients to and from imaging tables.

  • Performs Quality Control procedures on equipment.

  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness in the department.

  • Provides Patient education

  • Follows ALARA

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):

  • Completion of a program in Nuclear Medicine Technology or a four year degree in Nuclear Medicine.

  • Certified as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.

  • Possession of a current Iowa Permit to Practice Nuclear Medicine.

  • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment

  • Organizational Requirements:

  • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Considerable knowledge of isotope laboratory procedures and equipment; considerable knowledge of isotope preparation procedures; considerable knowledge of quality control tech¬niques; considerable knowledge of records and reports; considerable knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission Rules and Regulations.

  • Ability to prepare isotopes for administration; ability to evaluate scans; ability to operate and maintain equipment; ability to prepare appropriate records and reports.

  • Skill in isotope preparation and scanning equipment operation.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra and geometry, and their applications

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  • Active Listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

  • Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.
