Mary Greeley Medical Center Respiratory Care and Sleep Manager in Ames, Iowa

  • Position Summary

  • Under general direction, provides organizational leadership in the development, implementation and maintenance of service consistent with the Mission, Vision, Values and Strategic Plan of the Mary Greeley Medical Center. Leader understands, supports, communicates, and promotes hospital initiatives. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care and a respectful work environment.

  • Position Responsibilities

  • Unit Specific Position Responsibilities

  • Ensures coverage and oversight for inpatient respiratory care, critical care, diagnostics (PFTs, Bronchs, EKGs, Echos, etc), Pulmonary Rehab, Neurodiagnostic (EEG, Sleep), including staffing schedule and coordination of daily activities in each area.

  • Provides management call 50% and therapist call, as needed.

  • Functions in capacity of staff when staffing needs arise.

  • Maintains Blood Gas Lab to meet accreditation standards: Analysis, Maintenance, Quality Control, and Proficiency.

  • Assists with patient and staff rounding.

  • Provides leadership with daily patient care conferences and discharge planning, including Transition Care Program.

  • Coordinates annual Skills Day Competency Assessment Program, and new competencies throughout the year, to ensure staff clinical competency.

  • Is a resource and trains staff on new equipment and documents competency.

  • Serves as resource and facilitator, as needed, for current and new clinical initiatives to ensure best practice.

  • Assists with department Quality Management for all services, including updating and maintaining department policies, procedures, and protocols.

  • Provides staff education and training.

  • Meets regularly with Medical Director in each area.

  • Maintains availability of department supplies and equipment.

  • Collaborates with Department Director for capital budgeting and annual business reviews.

  • Completes QA report quarterly for Sleep Lab Accreditation Maintenance.

  • Completes application and site visit for AASM accrediation every 5 years utilizing the standards of accrediation per the AASM.

  • Manages orders received via internal and external referrals in each departments' work que.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Required Qualifications:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist and Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license

  • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) training or within 90 days of hire.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification within six months of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.

  • Bachelor of Respiratory Care or Bachelors of Science (in related field).

  • Sleep Disorder Specialists.

  • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, statistics, and their applications.

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  • Active Listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times

  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  • Ability to manage one’s time effectively.

  • Minimum of three years clinical experience as RRT.

  • Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional respiratory care specific to scientific principles; research; administration of best practice clinical care; the ability to operate complex equipment; knowledge of coaching and teaching techniques; of basic management theory.

  • Ability to provide professional respiratory care; establish and maintain a working rapport and relationship with physicians and all members of the healthcare team; problem solve and use critical thinking skills; to communicate both verbally and in writing; use computer.

  • Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for appropriate developmental age of population served.

  • Proficient with basic computer skills.
