JOB SUMMARY

An Engineer III will have started focusing their engineering development toward a specific competency or industry. They will be an expert in process and use of at least one CAD package (SolidWorks preferred). The engineer is expected to work closely with controls and software engineering, understanding the interaction and dependency between them. They will be able to drive other project team members, within their discipline, to solve problems and overcome hurdles that may affect project timelines.

Mechanical Design Engineer

Will be able to design complex mechanical systems from start to finish. Will have a good understanding of commonly used manufacturing and tooling processes and how to effectively design parts for them. Will have a good understanding of Design for Assembly. Be able to interpret requirements and determine options for optimization, assess impact to design cost, assembly methods or times, risk for implementation, and assess design implementation or design modifications of existing product to support automation.

Should have experience in machine applications, including but not limited to assembly tuning, motion control, and machine vision. Specific experience in precision assembly with vision guidance, vacuum chamber designs, lamination, and robot programming are a plus.

Should be familiar with project management processes, scheduling and project milestones in order to drive their portions of design to meet or beat project schedules.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· A complete understanding of SolidWorks CAD and familiarity with SolidWorks PDM, or a similar PDM package.

· At the appropriate process phase gates, provide a complete design package to be entered into our PDM and SAP systems. This includes drawing release packages, BOM releases, and engineering documentation

· Develop documentation including manuals, test & validation plans, and production application notes.

· Familiar with basic electrical design and machine software. Should be able to troubleshoot minor issues and explain requirements for these areas per the mechanical design.

· Work cooperatively with the controls and software groups to determine holistic solution

· Support business development in defining new project requirements and concepts. Be able to understand customer requirement documents and refine these into a machine solution concept

· Be able to speak to the intention of a design for internal and external stakeholder meetings

· Provide progress updates and estimates to completion for their portions of design, with little or no assistance.

· Mentoring design engineers I & II and technicians

· Provide onsite technical support for all manufacturing builds including engineering prototypes, NPI & production releases.

· Stay abreast of the latest technology and techniques to provide designs that are competitive and cost effective.

· May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

HARDWARE KNOWLEDGE

Experience in robot selection, motor/stage selection, and pneumatic actuators for general and precision motion control solutions. Experience in machine vision hardware selection, setup, and programming in Cognex Insight, VisionPro, or similar.

ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret industry standards, customer requirement documents, and internal project documentation. Ability to communicate meaningful updates using email or Teams (or similar). Ability to write procedure manuals, engineering notes, and support customer service. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and vendors.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to develop mathematical models of physical reality and solve them, then implement the results. Must be able to research and find solutions to novel challenges using internal or external support, such as vendors.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university

· Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in machine design, particularly in vision systems and robot programming

The pay range for this role is $75,333 - $135,600. Job-related, non-discriminatory factors used to determine the actual offered rate include qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data, and consideration of internal equity.
