Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.
DEPARTMENT: Project Management & Engineering
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional hours outside of normal work schedule, including weekends, may be required to attend public meetings and to provide oversight of construction work.
LOCATION: 4700 Elmore Road
This position is eligible for a five percent (5%) additional professional certification pay with a valid State of Alaska Professional Engineering (PE) license. Eligible candidates are required to provide evidence of the professional certification.
Example of Duties
This position evaluates projects related to streetlights, load centers, storm drain lift stations, and storm drain thaw systems, reviews construction design documents and provides review documents to project managers, schedules, priorities, develops cost estimates, maintains an annual budget and determines work methods. Works directly with Project Management & Engineering (PM&E) Capital Improvements coordinator to plan, develop, and implement annual budgets for various construction and maintenance projects relating to streetlights, storm drains, and other electrical functions throughout the municipality. Assists with updating and developing design criteria and specifications for municipal electrical facilities with consideration of national electrical standards, emerging technologies, and evolving municipal needs. Coordinates maintenance activities with local electrical utilities, monitors service areas of electrical utilities for compliance, evaluates repair requests from the general public, and assigns those requests to the appropriate utility. Evaluates damaged electrical systems and advises maintenance crews on emergency repair plans to ensure the safety of the general public until repairs are made and inspects existing electrical systems and makes recommendations to maintenance crews on repairs and upgrades to bring systems into conformance with current national electrical and municipal standards. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, and four (4) years of professional engineering experience.
OR
Associate's degree in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, and six (6) years of professional engineering experience.
Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Preferences:
American Red Cross First Aid Certification and American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or equivalent.
Illuminating Engineers Society membership.
Alaska Professional Engineer registration or ability to obtain

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. Military Service Interview Preference :
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
