Actalent Clinical Lab Analyst in Ankeny, Iowa

Job Title: Clinical Lab AnalystJob Description

Perform newborn screening testing on blood spot specimens to identify infants at risk for inherited conditions using various methods including immunoassay, enzyme assay, electrophoresis, HPLC, tandem mass spectrometry, and molecular methods.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily operation and routine maintenance, calibration, and assist in troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment.

  • Document and review newborn screening test data, procedures, and results.

  • Release data and reports for use by physicians, health care professionals, and newborn screening medical follow-up programs.

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and prepare documentation for test verification or validation studies.

  • Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures in accordance with established standard operating procedures and policies.

  • Recognize basic problems and assist in troubleshooting laboratory method and performance issues.

  • Assemble quality control data for further analysis; recognize problems; document issues; perform root cause analysis; and initiate corrective actions.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) qualifications for high complexity testing (6 semesters of Biology and 6 semesters of Chemistry).

  • At least 3 months of hands-on laboratory experience.

  • Experience with immunoassay, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology techniques.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Lab Technologist or MLT.

  • Completion of human genetics college course work.

  • Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) experience.

  • Six months to one year of related newborn screening (NBS) laboratory experience.

Work Environment

This position is based at the State Lab in Ankeny, IA. The lab operates 24/7 to ensure timely testing of newborn blood specimens for potential inherited disorders. The lab processes samples from Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska. The role involves working overnight shifts from 9:30 PM to 7:30 AM on a rotating schedule of 5 days on and 4 days off, including weekends and holidays. Initial training will be conducted during daytime hours (8:00 AM to 4:30 PM) for the first one to two weeks before transitioning to the night shift. The team consists of about 7 members, rotating between three separate testing areas. The dress code requires long pants and closed-toed shoes.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00
