Mom's Meals R&D Technician I in Ankeny, Iowa

Position SummaryThe R&D Technician I will play a supporting role the Research & Development team by assisting with food product testing, ingredient evaluation, and documentation processes. This position is responsible for receiving, organizing samples, maintaining accurate records, and supporting the execution of R&D related projects and deliverables. The ideal candidate has a strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.Position Responsibilities may include, but not limited to

  • Receive, label, and organize incoming and outgoing samples for testing, sensory evaluation, and analysis

  • Maintain accurate records of sample inventory and track ingredient usage to ensure availability

  • Prepare, cut, and label food prototypes and formulations for sensory evaluation, product testing, and analysis

  • Ensure proper storage and handling of ingredients, samples, and prototypes to maintain quality and safety standards

  • Assist in the updating of Bill of Materials (BOM) data, ensuring accuracy with each change related ingredient substitutions in current formulas

  • Update project tracking documentation, ensuring timely and accurate completion

  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of the test kitchen area, including equipment, utensils, storage, and workspaces

  • Assist R&D chefs and food scientists in preparing and conducting tests of new and existing food products

  • Follow precise recipes and procedures to prepare food prototypes for evaluation and testing

  • Collaborate with the R&D team to support the development and improvement of food products, assisting in various stages of the product development lifecycle and evaluations

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Culinary Science, or a related field

  • 1-3 years of experience in a food science lab, test kitchen, or production environment

  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook Teams) and experience with data entry software

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and execute tasks with precision

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with internal and external teams

  • Knowledge of food safety and handling practices

  • Familiarity with Bill of Materials (BOM) and experience with data entry and document management systems

  • Working knowledge of general mathematics

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, work in cold environments, and lift or move up to 30 lbs.

Physical Requirements

  • Repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands and/or fingers

  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting, remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods

  • Visual perception to perform job including peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
