Summary

The Office of Counseling and Workplace Resilience (OCWR) in Michigan Medicine supports the mental health and well-being of Michigan Medicine faculty, staff, and learners by providing confidential short-term mental health counseling, consultation, crisis intervention, and mental health programming and outreach services.

The OCWR Assistant Director works to support program operations and provide leadership on organizational initiatives to advance mental health at Michigan Medicine. The Assistant Director provides oversight for clinical case management and escalation procedures, and clinical and functional supervision to staff within OCWR, including within the Medical Student Mental Health Program (MSMHP); this OCWR program provides mental health services to University of Michigan Medical School students. The Assistant Director supports OCWR activities by providing leadership on outreach, consultation, and mental health programming. You will report to the Director of OCWR.

Responsibilities*

Office Operations

  • In collaboration with the Director, oversee clinical services, including providing clinical supervision and maintaining processes for intake, treatment, and referral.

  • Provide oversight of clinical case management, including leadership on acute event escalation processes and coordination with partners on workplace mental health procedures.

  • Functional and clinical supervision of 4-6 staff.

  • Provide leadership on new and ongoing counseling services and well-being programs that support the mental health of Michigan Medicine faculty, staff, and learners.

  • In partnership with the Chief Behavioral Health Strategist and OCWR Director, assist with strategic planning efforts for OCWR, and articulate unit objectives.

Programming and Outreach

  • Identify educational needs, develop and deliver workshops, presentations and psychoeducational groups on subjects such as mental health in the workplace, grief/loss, and compassion practices.

  • Provide confidential consultation and coaching to Michigan Medicine leaders, supervisors, and groups on a variety of mental health topics, including responding to impactful events, loss/grief, team conflicts, and acknowledging stress and burnout.

  • Facilitate group emotional support debriefing meetings and provide acute stress support to faculty, staff, and medical learners.

  • Serve on Michigan Medicine committees and contribute expertise to inform mental health strategy and resources.

Mental Health Counseling

  • Provide short-term individual and group mental health counseling for Michigan Medicine faculty, staff, and learners, who present with a range of mental health and psychological concerns related to personal and professional well-being.

  • Perform a broad range of clinical services using evidence-based therapeutic methods for resolution of psychological and work concerns, using assessment, conceptualization, and intervention.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's or Doctoral Degree in a relevant social or behavioral science discipline (e.g., MA/MS/NP in Counseling, Social Work, Psychiatric Nursing, or PhD/PsyD in Counseling Psychology or Clinical Psychology)

  • Minimum of 4 years experience as a licensed mental health practitioner working with diverse communities

  • Licensed for independent practice in the State of Michigan, or able to obtain license for independent practice in Michigan within 3 months of hire.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience

  • Experience with a wide spectrum of evidence-based clinical work in mental health assessment, conceptualization, and crisis management

  • Demonstrated experience in responding to trauma and crisis, including offering emotional support debriefing and interpersonal process groups

Work Locations

Will require travel to multiple locations on and off the medical campus. Flexible or hybrid work may be allowed; flexible work arrangements are reviewed annually and may be subject to change based on our needs.
