Summary
The Michigan Center for Respiratory Virus Research and Response and the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health is seeking an experienced, highly organized and motivated research project staff to join our dynamic team. The Center has a large portfolio of respiratory virus research studies in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health, examining vaccine effectiveness for influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative team and contribute to research studies with meaningful outcomes. This is a full-time research position working in the Center under the direction of Center leadership. The ideal candidate will have previous experience managing research projects, overseeing recruitment and data collection activities, proven experience and familiarity with laboratory activities (PCR workflows, serologic assays, automated instrumentation) and experience with SAS/R statistical packages.
Responsibilities*
Study site oversight: Serve as a coordinator and liaison for a hospital-based study conducted at Michigan Medicine main hospital. Coordinate all aspects of study implementation including, subject enrollment, specimen and data management and quality assurance, specimen transport and processing, weekly reporting, and fostering collaborative and positive relationships with participating health care staff. Assist in reporting of study data to public health partners on a regular basis.
Data management: Monitor data entry process, overseeing study recruitment temporary staff and data staff. Ensure that all REDCap files are completed and uploaded on time to funder. Respond to requests from funding organization regarding missing data or data errors.
Training and oversight of research assistants: Train, supervise and support study Research Assistants who conduct patient recruitment, sample collection and processing, and study data collection and entry. Perform quality assessments of study data on an ongoing basis throughout the collection period.
Molecular Assays: Perform viral RNA extractions using automated robotic extraction platform (KingFisher Flex system). Test extracted viral RNA against panels of respiratory viruses using Real Time RT-PCR assays and various instrument platforms (Applied Biosystems 7500, QuantStudio 7Pro). Troubleshoot and validate new PCR assays.
Specimen Handling: Check in and aliquot large volumes of respiratory specimens (swabs in viral media), and human blood samples (sera or plasma). Isolate PBMCs from whole blood, count using automated cell-counter, aliquot.
Serologic Assays: Perform and assist with various serologic assays used to detect antibodies to Influenza, SARS-Co-2 and other respiratory viruses (Hemagglutination and Neuraminidase Inhibition, MesoScale V-Plex Panels)
Center Data Management: Enter and manage data from laboratory assays performed. Create final analytic datasets for Center investigators. Interpret results from laboratory assays.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in a health science discipline, public health, epidemiology, or related field is necessary with 3+ years of research experience.
Must have knowledge and demonstrated experience with ICH good clinical practice, GCP, and FDA regulatory guidelines; excellent MS OFFICE, MS ACCESS, EXCEL skills
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Comfort with specimen processing and handling (respiratory swabs, blood products
Solid foundation in laboratory bench work and sterile technique
Technical skills with micro, multi-channel, and serological pipetting
Experience performing RNA extraction, RT-PCR, and serological testing
Expertise in Microsoft Access and Excel
Ability to use statistical software packages (SAS, R, STATA, or Python)
Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Ability to initiate tasks and work independently while employing excellent communication and organizational skills
Demonstrated experience with several of the following:
Conducting and overseeing participant recruitment and data collection in research studies
Maintaining specimen inventories
Collection and quality monitoring of data from observational studies
Communication with collaborators and professionals and knowledge of how to build relationships with external partners
Desired Qualifications*
Master's in Public Health or related field.
Experience in the field of infectious diseases epidemiology preferred.
Comfortable using SAS and/or R for statistical analysis strongly preferred.
Experience with high throughput laboratory techniques (e.g. pooled PCR, large scale specimen intake management).
Experience with robotic pipetting and programming Eppendorf epMotion, Opentrons or similar automated stations.
Work Locations
This position requires fully on-site work.
Additional Information
This position is term-limited for one year with possibility of extension based on funding and performance.
