Verify your own course schedule against the schedule for the course to which you are applying as a GSI. All GSIs are required to attend the lecture and discussion times as posted. In Winter 2024, the ENVIRON 376 GSI posting had 33 applicants.

Course Description

Ethics is a matter of respecting in thought and action those things that we value. How do we value the natural world and how do we shape our behavior in response to those values? How are we to understand the place of humans within nature?

In our real world of environmental questions and issues, various environmental philosophies such as the conservation movement, deep ecology, ecofeminism, and others weigh in on such diverse things as:

• What attitudes and values drove the logging era in Michigan and how should we value forests today?

• Are humans distinct from nature? Are humans a part of nature? Do humans transcend nature

• What ?good? are the Great Lakes? What should the goals of human management and interaction be?

• Does the label `organic? mean anything, or should we be beyond organic? What effects on the natural world come from our agricultural practices?

• What makes a species `invasive Should humans transfer genes across species boundaries?

• Why should we care about wilderness? Is `the wild? a place, a construct, or a quality of existence?

• Should nature, organisms, or natural features be extended personhood or rights?

• What is the basis for environmental justice claims?

Responsibilities*

• Meet weekly with the instructor

• Attend lecture classes

• Lead discussion groups (3/wk. on the 5 weeks corresponding to writing assignments)

• Deliver one or two course lectures

• Assist in grading of papers and exams

• Hold office hours.

Required Qualifications*

• Management of course Canvas site

• Experience with MSWord, Excel, and Powerpoint.

• Applicant must be in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan. If the language of instruction at undergraduate institution was not English, student must be evaluated by the English Language Institute (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass the GSI-OET or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A

• Must have taken or take concurrently SWC 933.

Desired Qualifications*

• Excellent writing skills and ability to provide feedback on writing.

• Previous coursework in environmental ethics is strongly preferred.

• Familiarity with environmental issues dealt with in class.

• Good organization and work habits.

Decision Making Process

Faculty review applications for positions in their courses and indicate their ranked preferences. They are also asked to indicate whether they regard any applicants as unqualified and why based on the Required and Desired qualifications listed above. Faculty may look at previous teaching experience as a positive, but will not view a lack of teaching experience as a negative on an application.

Applications are NOT rolling. Faculty will not be provided with any applications until after the application deadline.

In the event that a student is ranked as the number one preference for multiple courses, they will receive multiple offer letters and have the opportunity to decide which offer they want to accept.

Selection Process

Instructors have access to their position description and selection criteria along with the applications for their course(s). Instructors review their applications and rank the candidates for each position. Once professors have submitted their top candidates, candidates are matched to the professors who selected them and sent offer letters.
