Job Summary

The University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center (UMIPC) is seeking a candidate with outstanding research administration and data management activities, under the direction of the managing director, and center faculty. The University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center in the Emergency Medicine Department is one of eleven CDC-funded Injury Control Research Centers nationally, that conducts, translates, and accelerates injury prevention research into practice and policy to reduce the burden of injuries across the Great Lakes and US. The center carries out research, training, and outreach activities, in collaboration with other research units at the University, as well as external injury prevention organizations, such as the state health department.

The Research Area Specialist Senior will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team at every stage of Center research projects. The candidate should have a general understanding of academic research, basic elements of research administration (e.g., research ethics; acquiring IRB approvals) and have a strong desire to learn about the injury prevention discipline.

Responsibilities*

  • Oversight biannual progress reporting for the UMIPC grant, including organization of all progress report elements, and working with center faculty, pilot project PIs, and UMIPC core project PIs, to get all required progress reporting ready for submission to CDC

  • Oversight and partnership with leadership on various center activities such as internship program, pilot grant program, and community partnerships

  • Work within the eResearch system to prepare and submit Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, Data Use Agreements (DUA) and Unfunded Agreements (UFA) for center-affiliated projects.

  • Assist faculty with the preparation of grant submissions (e.g., scientific writing, locating relevant references, or assisting with drafting of the human subjects protection plan)

  • Qualitative data assessment, analysis and scientific presentations at professional conferences

  • Develop and design complex research projects within the UMIPC

  • Supervise exempt and non-exempt research and support personnel.

  • Monitor project budget and expenditures

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in a related discipline (public health, social sciences)

  • 5-6 years of experience at any level of academic research

  • Demonstrated ability to complete Institutional Review Board applications and annual reports

  • Experience managing and monitoring data

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team and strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Professional demeanor and excellent interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work on multiple different projects

  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to use available resources to independently complete tasks

  • Ability to learn new skills under supervision

  • Experience working directly with faculty in a related discipline

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
