Job purpose

The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos, fan, and fan drive components for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

MISSION:

The position is for a turbocharger bearing system development/project engineer in the Mechanical Systems group within Commercial Vehicle (CV) Product Development. This group is responsible for design and validation of various turbocharger systems; Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG), boost control , bearing systems (both axial and radial ), sealing, mechanical joints and the rotating assembly. Concept development, design and validation of traditional fluid film journal (axial and radial) and rolling element bearing systems will involve project management, engineering design and analysis and testing. Test reports, DVP&R/DFMEA (generation and completion) and reporting/communicating will be necessary. Must be able to work in a team environment and successfully communicate with cross-functional team members.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Writes test specifications and test reports.

  • Develops test plans.

  • Writes qualification test reports.

  • Specifies dimensions and materials for turbo components.

  • Works with other engineering groups to develop design practices and test procedures.

  • Develops component test rigs.

  • Maps the functional limits of turbo components.

  • Works with lab technicians to develop test practices.

  • Writes validation test requirements for turbocharger components used in gas and diesel engine applications.

  • Performs root cause analysis of failures.

  • Designs and models turbo components using CAD, FEA, CFD, CHT, rotor dynamic software .

  • Analyzes components for stress, life, heat transfer, vibration and rotor dynamics.

  • Works in project teams as the key technical representative and possesses good communication skills.

  • Works with vendors to develop components that can be produced with high-volume low-cost processes.

  • Understands and adheres to current quality and control policies.

  • Understands and adheres to current health, safety, and environmental policies.

  • Communicates and enforces safe work procedures.

  • Identifies and closes safety issues (suggestions, inspection and investigation findings) and their corrective actions.

  • Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer (or similar technical field)

  • Five years' experience, preferably dealing with rotating turbo machinery

  • Broad background in engineering technical disciplines that include vibration, heat transfer, stress, fluid dynamics, lubrication , thermodynamics, rotor dynamics , rotor balancing , and controls.

  • Ability to use ProE and other CAD tools to model turbo components and related turbo machinery.

  • Technical competence with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GDT).

  • Analytical background in vibration, stress and fluid flow.

  • Experience with generating and maintaining DFMEA and DVP&R documents

  • Knowledge of FEA tools used to predict stress and heat transfer.

  • Understanding of stress and strain life prediction methods.

  • Ability to manage support resources that use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulations .

  • Has a basic understanding of aerodynamics and compressible fluid flow.

  • Knowledge of high temperature material properties.

  • Understanding of surface treatments for metal parts.

  • Experience writing technical statements of work (SOW).

  • Ability to manage suppliers when procuring development hardware.

  • Understanding of high-speed data acquisition and FFT analyzers. Experience with pressure transducers, temperature transducers, flow meters, accelerometers, microphones, speed sensors, proximity probes and other measuring instruments.

  • Knowledge of high temperature instrumentation for measuring flow, pressure, temperature, imbalance, rotor motion, and vibration.

  • Experience with turbochargers preferred.

  • Capability to plan and manage projects.

  • Proficient with basic PC tools such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project.
