Job purpose

The BorgWarner Arden campus offers two world class technical centers and a cutting-edge manufacturing facility that designs and produces turbos, fan, and fan drive components for the automotive industry. The Arden campus offers a multitude of career opportunities and is in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the development of aerodynamic stages including identification of optimal combinations to deliver best performance and durability. The engineer will be responsible to lead and manage aspects of each development including project planning, support internal and external procurement, testing, analysis, and documentation. Activities span concept development through successful engineering release of each new stage or aero technology. This position will learn and use technical engineering tools including Aero Layout, 3D CAD, CFD, FEA, Numerical Optimization and other turbomachinery-specific and analytical tools as needed.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Responsible to Product Line Manager for high level goals and deliverables, responsible to Global Aero Team leader for all day-to-day tasks and deliverables.

  • Responsible for technical engineering work to lead and develop new aero stages.

  • Works closely with the internal and external customers, consulting as needed to establish appropriate targets and support customer communications.

  • Responsible to develop using classical turbomachinery methods, CFD, Numerical Optimization, and performance validation through hot gas stand testing or on-engine.

  • Manages testing and validation of hardware in collaboration with application engineering. Reporting of test data and results.

  • Responsible to understand and analyze durability factors, execute stress based mechanical optimization of impellers using FEA. Consult or collaborate with structural mechanic experts on high and low cycle fatigue and/or creep analysis.

  • Develops technical project plans including basic resource requirements and timelines.

  • Generates 3D solid models of complex aerodynamic shapes and surfaces based upon engineering tools and aerodynamics software.

  • Participates in routine product development activities such as scaling of compressor/turbine impellers, volute calculations, and design reviews.

  • Revises and/or develops new reports or work instructions for design of key turbo components and systems based upon outcome of development studies.

  • Generates work orders for Model Shop and Lab to create and test prototype hardware.

  • Understands and adheres to current quality and control policies.

  • Understands and adheres to current health, safety, and environmental policies.

  • Communicates and enforces safe work procedures.

  • Identifies and closes safety issues (suggestions, inspection and investigation findings) and their corrective actions.

  • Performs other duties as requested, directed or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aero Engineering is required. MSME is preferred.

  • Experience with turbocharger stage performance development is highly preferred.

  • At least 10 years of engineering experience designing and/or developing turbomachinery using tools such as CFD analysis.

  • At least 5 years in diesel engine or automotive component design is preferred.

  • Project management experience for new product development.

  • Extensive CFD knowledge is required, strong understanding of optimization is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of combustion engines and FEA is desired.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Project, etc.) is required.
