POLITICO Defense Editor in Arlington, Virginia

Description

POLITICO is seeking an enterprising and energetic editor to guide its expanding defense coverage.

The editor will lead a high-profile team covering the politics and policy of defense — from the international debates over weapons and warfare to internal struggles over the budget to how it all fits into the U.S. election and the next administration. We’re looking for a strong newsroom leader to help readers navigate fast-moving and complex tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine, crises in the Middle East, threats from China and flashpoints around the world.

What You'll Do:

  • Drive a competitive, lively and high-impact coverage agenda surrounding the key decisionmakers and dynamics in the Pentagon, Capitol Hill and industry.

  • Work closely with the foreign affairs, cyber and other teams in the U.S. to offer our readers superior coverage of the intersection of defense policy and politics — both for subscribers and for the homepage.

  • Partner with editors and reporters in POLITICO’s growing operation in Europe to produce big-picture stories on a global scale.

  • Assign and edit a mix of breaking news, quick-turn enterprise, daily newsletter and longer-term deep dives across all our digital platforms.

  • Help generate new products and improve premium offerings to enhance the Pro experience, attract new subscribers and strengthen our live events.

  • Manage and coach a team of scoop-driven reporters.

What You'll Need:

  • Excellent news judgment with a track record of strong storytelling and editing.

  • Proven ability to handle a demanding job in a fast-paced newsroom.

  • Superior organizational skills and a rigorous commitment to fair-minded, nonpartisan journalism.

  • Experience editing or reporting on the defense beat.

  • Willingness to think big, see around corners and find new ways to expand our coverage of one of Washington’s most important beats.

We are driven by our values. We are relentless contributors, disruptors of the status quo, collaborators, talent cultivators and DEI stewards. Our culture is defined by grit, total integrity and a prioritization on innovation.

We value our people. Click here (https://www.politico.com/blogs/meet-politico/2017/08/24/faq-241910) for more on what we offer and what it’s like to work for POLITICO.
