Summary

The Formwork Engineer II designs and prepares formwork layout drawings addressing the technical aspects of formwork layout, forming materials, system selection, and proper implementation. Supports project planning to ensure the most efficient, safe, and economical forming systems are incorporated in the project design. When required, work may be reviewed and stamped by a licensed engineer.

Roles and Responsibilities

The F ormwork Engineer II will perform the following duties in a safe, productive, and effective manner:

  • Provides Engineering input for proper form selection

  • Calculates loads for shoring, forming and reshoring

  • Determines member sizes and proper spacing

  • Ensures formwork loads fall within the capacities of the crane

  • Confirms framing layouts meet the design load requirements

  • Designs lifting and rigging equipment

  • Designs temporary bracing for existing structures such as walls and floors

  • Reviews the designs and calculations of Formwork Engineer I

  • Identifies and resolves any unique design issues on the project

  • Produces formwork shop drawings based on the design of the chosen formwork system

  • Produces pour break drawings

  • Produces crane layout drawings

  • Reviews construction drawings for dimensional conflicts and clarifications

  • Issues RFIs to resolve conflicts

  • Produces repetitive drawings for typical formwork layout

  • Maintains project drawing files

  • Plots and assembles drawings per standards set by the Engineering Department

  • Compares and checks production drawings to the design criteria of the construction documents

  • Identifies safety issues on the drawings

  • Communicates with the field on drawing conflicts and issues related to formwork and brings resolution

  • Maintains standard detail library

  • Ensures critical framing sections are shown on the drawings

  • Reviews and critiques vendor supplied drawings

  • Participates in transition meetings to determine production schedule for shop and engineering drawings and work order production

  • Quantifies take-offs of form material to the shop for fabrication and shipment

  • Compares shop production with the field progress

  • Produces work orders to shop for pre-assembly of forms

  • Provides input related to delivery dates for formwork delivered to project

  • Performs pre-pour inspections

  • Trains and qualifies others to do independent pre pour inspections

  • Critically views all aspects of construction design

  • Supervises, trains, evaluates, and develops direct reports to ensure maximum returns on investment

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Civil or Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; and a minimum of four years related experience and/or training

  • Must be an Engineer in Training (EIT) and pursuing a path towards licensure or licensed in applicable state

  • Proficiency in Microsoft software programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Proficient in AutoCAD

  • Basic understanding of BIM

  • Ability to perform engineering analysis, such as load calculations, pressures, shear, moment, and deflection calculations

  • Proficiency in Microsoft software programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Proficient in AutoCAD

  • Ability to understand, customize and modify spreadsheets

  • Basic understanding of BIM

  • Ability to use, understand and interpret structural analysis software

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to interact with project personnel, clients, and Engineers

  • Ability to define problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to think outside of the box
