About our opportunity:

The purpose of this position is to provide critical City services to the residents of Asheville. This position is for a "designated automated driver", meaning you will primarily operate automated side loader trucks and will receive $1.50/hr supplemental pay. As a Sanitation Driver II, you will operate sanitation trucks to collect solid waste along an assigned route, following established safety procedures and accounting for traffic conditions and obstacles. You will also have the responsibility of training less experienced staff as needed, and the opportunity to work on a variety of other departmental projects as available. While this position is a designated automated driver position, this position may also drive knuckleboom collection trucks or other sanitation collection vehicles as needed.

What you'll be doing:

  • Drives automated sideloading, knuckleboom, and other sanitation collection trucks to collect solid waste along an assigned route: positions vehicle to allow for the most efficient and effective loading or dumping of materials; monitors and adjusts pace of vehicle and collection activities to ensure timely completion of route; operates mechanisms on truck to secure and collect waste; ensures that load is properly balanced, covered, and contained.

  • Utilizes on-board technology (City tablet or cell phone): uses software programs to document and report inspections, on-route issues, tonnages, and other relevant information.

  • Follows established safety procedures: utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear; monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; monitors traffic conditions to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; and reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.

  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a rear loader, roll-off truck, forklift, and other tools and equipment.

  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment to supervisor.

  • Performs related duties in support of department operations: trains less experienced staff in proper operation and use of equipment; assists with brush and manual trash collection; assists during emergency weather events.

  • Communicates with supervisor, subordinates, other City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives, reviews, prepares, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate various forms, reports, correspondence, route sheets, tonnage reports, vehicle maintenance logs, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned and/or as needed for the Public Works Department.

About you:

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:

  • High school diploma or equivalency (Required).

  • One year of experience operating heavy equipment (Required).

  • Solid waste collection equipment experience, including driving rear packer or knuckleboom collection truck (Preferred).

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid NC Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required.

Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Work Schedule: This position typically works Mon-Thurs 6:30am-5pm or 7am-5:30pm, depending on assignment. This position may also work Fridays, weekends, holidays, or during weather events, emergency situations, or special events as needed.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
