Job Description:

The Russ College of Engineering & Technology’s Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment ( ISEE ) at Ohio University invites applications from enthusiastic and skilled researchers to contribute to exciting work in electrified biofuels processing. This opportunity centers around a collaborative 18-month initiative with a leading international energy corporation, aimed at evaluating an innovative electrified method for converting renewable feedstocks into biocrude via hydrothermal liquefaction ( HTL ). The research endeavor will encompass several key areas of focus: • Design, experimentation, and demonstration of novel Joule-heated technology for biomass HTL ; • Optimization of HTL mediums to enhance energy efficiency during processing; • Detailed analysis and evaluation of feedstocks, biocrude and residual solid byproducts; • Reaction engineering, including experimental characterization, energy analyses, and reactor modeling.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct experimental research spanning from initial proof-of-concept through the optimized bench scale electrified HTL process, adequate for performing initial economic and environmental analyses.

  • Actively engage in interdisciplinary collaborations, communicating frequently with the ISEE research group and researchers in private industry. Provide mentoring for graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Write technical reports and develop presentations for industry partners. Develop and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts. Assist in securing intellectual property rights on inventions.

  • Participate in professional development and educational outreach programs; e.g., safety, recruiting, procurement, and diversity. There may also be opportunities for teaching and grant writing, if interest and opportunities align.

This position will supervise student workers in a research lab setting.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field by start date of appointment.

At least one year of related experience.
