The Division of Cognitive and Developmental Neuroscience within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University is currently seeking an Associate Academic Research (AR) Scientist to join our team. Our work consists of investigating neural circuit contributions to reinforcement learning using neurophysiology and chemogenetics in the awake, behaving nonhuman primate.

The Associate Academic Research (AR) Scientist functions as a highly skilled contributor/researcher and has significant authorship on publications and advanced knowledge and expertise of and experimental platforms necessary to advance basic research programs focused on the neural mechanisms of learning and decision making in nonhuman primate. Expertise in use of single and multi-contact neural probes to conduct neurophysiological recordings of neurons in research animals is highly desirable. Proficiency in one or more scientific computing languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python, or R) as demonstrated by publication of one or more first author scientific publications is required. Greater than 5 years of experience working interactively with nonhuman primates is required. The Associate Academic Research Scientist will have leadership responsibilities, and will oversee quality and training of other team members, including graduate and undergraduate students. Duties include designing, developing and conducting research experiments involving nonhuman primates. The new hire will have expert knowledge and skills specific to the related program and advanced knowledge of methods of analyzing data from experimental platforms, including extensive experience in analyzing single-unit neural recordings at both the level of individual neurons and neural populations. Additional experience and expertise in implementing, the new hire will be expected to assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of a program. With approval of the leading Emory faculty member, the Associate (AR) Scientist may be the principal investigator on grant proposals. They will perform other responsibilities as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research and experimental platforms for analyzing, design and interpreting results Investigates and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results of basic and/or translational research.

  • Demonstrates increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other team members.

  • Aids in writing IACUC, IRB, Biosafety and other approval documents.

  • Oversees quality assurance of research conducted by other team members.

  • May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development and user support.

  • With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals.

  • Performs other responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD or MD and five years of professional level experience OR Master's degree and ten years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.

  • Laboratory experience will be based on area of assignment.

  • Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.

  • NOTE: Applicants applying with a M.D. or equivalent degree must be eligible for a Georgia medical license to meet the minimum qualifications.

PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.

  • Expertise in use of single and multi-contact neural probes to conduct neurophysiological recordings of neurons in laboratory animals.

  • Proficiency in one or more scientific computing languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python, or R) as demonstrated by publication of one or more first author scientific publications.

  • Greater than 5 years of experience working interactively with nonhuman primates is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work environment involves working with biohazardous blood and tissues from nonhuman primates.

  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

  • Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory environment.

  • Requires the ability to bend, kneel, and/or squat, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
