PulteGroup Director Federal Tax, Compliance & Audit in Atlanta, Georgia

JOB SUMMARY:This position is responsible for adherence to and the development of Company best practices relative to the oversight of federal tax compliance and audit. Manages a team of tax professionals responsible for preparation and timely filing of all federal tax returns including estimated payments and informational returns. Oversees federal income tax audit and works with IRS to manage CAP program. Responsible for identification and calculation of uncertain tax positions. Provides leadership and direction for a high performing tax department. Implements and drives the use of advanced technology and innovative, streamlined business solutions. Maintains overall SOX compliance. Adheres to Company tax policies, practices and procedures. Works under limited supervision.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly oversee and lead federal income tax compliance process to ensure timely, accurate filings, including creating appropriate level of documentation to support analyses, decisions, and conclusions.

  • Manage and control federal income tax audit process, respond to IRS questions and requests for information, and make recommendations to VP of Tax on actions necessary to agree, settle or disagree with proposed issues/adjustments.

  • Direct the conduct of the Tax Department’s relationship with the Internal Revenue Service.

  • Develop and maintain internal e-calendar for all tax filings.

  • Coordinate and oversee data collection and perform necessary analysis to prepare accurate, complete and timely tax returns.

  • Obtain state tax director resource needs to allocate and schedule department resources to ensure effective utilization of staff in the preparation, review and timely filing of all returns.

  • Assist with calculation of effective tax rate, reserves for uncertain positions, and valuation allowances.

  • Maintain SOX compliance requirements.

  • Supervise, develop and mentor assigned employees; expect and encourage innovation.

  • Create a culture of collaboration in which employees demonstrate teamwork, support cross-functional responsibilities, and contribute to the professional development of their peers.

  • Obtain detailed schedule of projected state tax payments from state tax director; provide Treasury with company-wide tax payment projections.

  • Conduct ongoing review of existing business processes and tools; identify and implement innovative, technology-based business solutions.

  • Maintain current tax advantaged structures.

  • Monitor proposed tax legislation and analyze new laws and regulations; effectively communicate relevant developments within the Tax Department.

  • Consult with the tax research & planning team to ensure accurate and timely reporting related to strategic changes.

  • Work in collaboration with designated business partners to gather and analyze data to implement tax strategies and achieve business objectives.

  • Assist with research, analysis, and implementation of tax planning strategies to reduce the Company’s effective tax rate and minimize cash tax outlay.

  • Validate completeness and ensure accuracy of legal entity based financial statements.

  • Develop and foster internal and external business networks to enhance business and industry knowledge.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of department policies.

  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Review and adhere to all Company policies and procedures.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and current CPA license or JD and LLM in Taxation

  • Masters of Accounting or Tax preferred

  • Minimum 12 years tax accounting experience in progressive leadership roles

  • Big Four accounting or large industry accounting experience

  • Experience managing federal income tax compliance and audits

  • Excellent knowledge of Federal Income Taxation and experience with state and local tax issues and planning strategies

  • Solid knowledge of ASC 740, complex tax laws and regulations, FASB pronouncements, income tax filing requirements, and generally accepted accounting principles

  • Extensive knowledge of tax technology and related best practices, and experience translating knowledge into actionable projects
