Chenega Enterprise Systems and Solutions , LLC , a Chenega Professional Services ’ company, is looking for a Geographer to work in the field of infectious and zoonotic diseases, specifically those related to tracking pathogens and identifying sources for bacterial enteric (intestinal) infections transmitted by food, water, and other routes. The specific projects involve defining research questions related to digital spatial and temporal data and mapping; independently planning, coordinating, and conducting geographic and GIS work in accordance with established and innovative methods and available guidelines; and coordinating and managing geographic methods research and evaluations including social determinants of health, social vulnerability index, and sociodemographic applications. This position will primarily be working with the National Wastewater Surveillance System .

Responsibilities

  • Apply state-of-the-art geostatistical techniques and geographic tools, including geospatial algorithms for outbreak detection and frequencies of facilities within specified geographic regions, in the analysis of integrated spatial and spatiotemporal, epidemiologic, medical record, and laboratory (whole genome sequencing) data using GeoDA, R, and ArcGIS, and/or Python.

  • Develop new geographic, geospatial, and geostatistical methods and techniques, along with

  • epidemiologic approaches for analyses of disease and population surveillance, especially applications of spatial and spatiotemporal analyses.

  • Serve as geographic subject matter expert on complex research projects involving spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal epidemiologic, medical record, and laboratory data, participating in planning and developing research, particularly geostatistical methods, and hypothesis generation, study design, model development and diagnostics, and interpretation and presentation of results in peer-reviewed literature, professional meetings, and conferences.

  • Foster collaboration with researchers from DFWED and across CDC by addressing challenging public health goals using new and improved geographic methods and analytic approaches.

  • Create/Develop shapefiles and maps, digitize and standardize paper maps, and identify and use of publicly available spatial data

  • Provide expert geographic, geospatial, geostatistical and GIS guidance to the division

  • Prepare presentations for interagency, intra agency, and professional meetings and participate in the writing of reports and peer-reviewed, published manuscripts.

  • Use a high level of knowledge, experience, and professional judgment.

  • Identify geographic, GIS, and geospatial upskilling and technology resource needs

  • Serve as geographic and social vulnerability index subject matter expert and provide advice and technical assistance for geographic projects, studies, and investigations by different branches that are new or significant departures from the relationships established in previous problems, studies, or investigations, causing outcomes that are usually original in nature.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in geography or a related field.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills,

  • Experience using GeoDA, R, and ArcGIS, geoPDF and/or Python

  • Advanced GIS ability

  • Experience in imagery analysis

  • Expertise and experience in geography, cartography, and GIS which includes skills in ArcGIS applications.

  • Experience describing innovative spatial or spatiotemporal techniques

Estimated Salary/Wage

USD $131,603.97/Yr. Up to USD $148,000.00/Yr.
