Position Summary

The National Cancer Institute ( NCI )’s Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium ( CPTAC ) is a national effort to accelerate the understanding of the molecular basis of cancer through the application of large-scale proteome and genome analysis, or proteogenomics. As a consortium member, the Morehouse School of Medicine ( MSM ) Office of Sponsored Research & Administration ( OSRA )/ Office of Translational Technologies ( OTT ) is seeking a skilled and experienced Phlebotomist & Laboratory Technician. This position will play an essential role in blood sample collection, as well as preparation and processing of tumor tissue collected in the operating room, with the assistance of a pathologist.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification as a Phlebotomist or Medical Laboratory Technician.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a clinical or research setting, with demonstrated skills in phlebotomy and laboratory procedures.

  • Experience in tissue sample collection and processing, preferably in an oncology setting.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a patient-centered approach.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of work.

  • Proficiency in data management systems and lab equipment.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

  • Perform blood draws following established procedures and protocols, ensuring study participant comfort and safety.

  • Assist in the collection, processing, and storage of tumor tissue in the operating room, under the guidance of a pathologist.

  • Maintain accurate records of all collected samples, ensuring their correct labeling and secure storage.

  • Document study participant information and clinical data following stringent data management protocols, while maintaining patient confidentiality.

  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including researchers, clinicians, and pathologists, to ensure efficient operations and high-quality research output.

  • Follow strict safety protocols, maintaining a clean and safe environment in the lab and during sample collection.

  • Participate in study participant consent procedures, explaining protocols and answering inquiries when necessary.

  • Keep abreast with the latest advancements and changes in phlebotomy, lab procedures, and clinical research protocols.

Immunization Requirements

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
