Position Summary
The Phlebotomist/Lab Technician plays a vital role in performing various laboratory procedures and assisting in the collection and analysis of specimens. This position involves drawing blood from patients, preparing and processing samples, operating laboratory equipment, and maintaining accurate records. The Phlebotomist/Lab Technician is responsible for ensuring the quality and integrity of laboratory testing, contributing to accurate diagnoses, and providing excellent patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or a related field is preferred.
Certification as a phlebotomy technician ( CPT ) or medical laboratory technician ( MLT ) is highly desirable.
Experience:
Proven experience and proficiency in phlebotomy techniques and specimen collection procedures especially with pediatric patients.
Knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory testing procedures, and basic laboratory equipment operation.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and laboratory staff.
Good computer skills and familiarity with laboratory information systems ( LIS ) for data entry and reporting.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in handling patient information and laboratory results.
Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on the needs of the healthcare facility.

Phlebotomy: Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients of all ages and demographics, ensuring proper patient identification and specimen labeling.
Specimen Collection: Collect and prepare other types of specimens, such as urine, stool, and tissue samples, adhering to established protocols and maintaining sterile techniques.
Sample Processing: Centrifuge, separate, and aliquot specimens, ensuring appropriate handling and storage to maintain sample integrity.
Laboratory Testing: Perform routine laboratory tests, such as complete blood counts, glucose, cholesterol, and basic chemistry panels, following standard protocols and procedures.
Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, microscopes, spectrophotometers, and automated analyzers, ensuring accuracy and reliability of test results.
Quality Control: Perform quality control checks on equipment, reagents, and test results, identifying and troubleshooting issues to ensure accurate and reliable laboratory testing.
Data Entry and Record Keeping: Accurately enter test results into laboratory information systems ( LIS ), maintain detailed records of tests performed, and generate reports as required.
Compliance and Safety: Adhere to laboratory safety protocols, infection control measures, and regulatory guidelines to ensure a safe working environment and accurate test results.
Inventory Management: Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage conditions.
Patient Care and Communication: Provide compassionate and professional care to patients during the sample collection process, addressing their concerns and explaining procedures as needed.

Immunization Requirements
It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
