UL, LLC Quality Laboratory Engineer in Atlanta, Georgia

This role is fully onsite Monday-Friday at our Atlanta, GA facility.

The Retail Consumer Goods - Retail Services division helps retailers and their suppliers to mitigate risks and deliver products that are safe, socially responsible and compliant with industry regulations and brand specifications. We provide compliance testing, analytical, physical, durability and quality testing, as well as prototype and production testing, root cause analysis, benchmarking, consumer usage analysis, and customized business solutions.

UL is seeking an Engineer to join our Retail Consumer Goods team in our Atlanta, GA laboratory. Under general supervision, manages execution and timely completion of engineering projects by analyzing project scope and determining project specifications, establishing and completing test programs, examining samples, preparing reports for clients, and operating/maintaining test equipment to ensure proper evaluation.

  • Develops a preliminary plan of investigation for failure analysis, determines root cause of product failures by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.

  • Communicates with customer’s quality assurance engineers to discuss technical issues and explain failure analyses. Acts to address engineer’s concerns and to resolve questions.

  • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing manufacturer's information, examining samples, and other pertinent information. Reviews applicable protocols, company manuals and appropriate technical literature.

  • Mentors, trains and coaches engineering interns/co-ops. Coordinates project work and activity of interns/co-ops including report out presentations.

  • Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results. Directs, builds and/or adapts test setups and equipment based on test plans. Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation. Records and explains test results and completes test report.

  • Operates and maintains test equipment appropriately to measure and test customer samples. Performs maintenance on designated test equipment and laboratory area.

  • Assists in developing special test methods and test equipment. Analyzes test program for adequacy and sequence. Provides suggestions for new equipment, processes, and forms to improve accuracy.

  • Resolve quality issues by identifying problems, examining solutions and providing feedback to the UL Retail customer, including issues of capability, tolerancing, and materials/handling related issues.

  • Develop Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Control plans, Measurement system analysis

  • Support the Retail Customer in the review and resolution of issues with suppliers, factories, service providers, merchandising, store operations, distribution, safety, customers, and other related supply chain components as required. Coordinates supplier visits to the lab and related joint tear downs.

  • Analyzes and interpret test, and inspection results, determines root cause of failures and non-conformities, and drive continuous improvement and best practices.

  • Assists in defining, developing and deploying data, analytics and reporting products and services.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering or Electronics Technology preferred.

  • 0-5 years of Quality Engineering or failure analysis experience strongly preferred

  • Strong verbal and written communication, and ability to interface with clients in a professional and effective manner

  • Self-starter, quick learner, and able to act as a mentor to others

  • Ability to comfortably and autonomously lift 50 lbs with assistance
