Southern Company Tax Accountant in Atlanta, Georgia

The purpose of this position is to timely and accurately prepare monthly, quarterly and annual federal, state, local and international transaction tax returns and monthly reconciliations. This position assists the Supervisor with research of applicable federal, state, local or international tax rules and regulations and analyzes Vertex sales and use tax system data. This position also gathers requested data for federal, state, local and international audits by tax authorities.

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by Competency

Business Execution:

  • Timely and accurately prepares monthly, quarterly and annual federal, state, local and international transaction tax returns and monthly reconciliations.

  • Gathers requested data for federal, state, local and international transaction tax audits by tax authorities.

Organizational Savvy

  • Builds and maintains relationships with Business Units, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable to ensure Tax involvement in business initiatives.

  • Ensures timely completion and filing of the transaction tax returns for which they are responsible

Business Acumen:

  • Performs analysis of Vertex sales and use tax systems data to ensure accuracy.

  • Analyzes general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable data to ensure proper recording of transaction tax data.

  • Updates transaction tax rate tables for the compliance and billing systems.

Communication:

  • Issues exemption certificates for vendors and receives and tracks exemption certificates from customers.

Problem Solving:

  • Assists Supervisor in identifying and implementing process changes as necessary to streamline the processes and mitigate compliance risks.

  • Maximizes utilization and functionality of transaction tax technology decision and returns system.

Teamwork:

  • Works closely with the business units to respond to transaction tax questions.

  • Assists Supervisor with research for federal, state and local and international transaction taxes

Qualifications

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

  • BA/BS degree in business, Finance or Accounting required

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMI (Certified Member of the Institute of Professionals in Taxation) preferred

Related Work Experience:

  • 3+ years tax experience in a similar sized organization or public accounting firm or the equivalent combination of education, experience and training required

  • Demonstrated experience in preparing transaction tax returns or relevant experience.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required

  • MS Excel – advanced proficiency

  • MS Word – intermediate proficiency

  • Time management skills

  • Strong accuracy skills and attention to detail

Preferred:

  • Vertex sales and use tax software

  • Oracle Cloud Financials

  • Proficiency with tax research software
