We are seeking entry-level and intermediate-level Tunnel Engineers to be based in our Atlanta, Georgia office. The successful candidate(s) will become part of Jacobs’ tunnel engineering team working on planning, designing, and constructing tunnels and other underground structures. This position offers the opportunity to grow personally and professionally with each project. Jacobs’ Atlanta-based tunnel group designs underground projects and supports construction. Recent projects and roles include:

  • Design and construction of tunnels and caverns, by TBM, drill and blast, and SEM methods.

  • Design of microtunnels and EPB TBM tunnels.

  • Design and consulting for major grouting programs in the USA and abroad.

  • Engineering support for major tunnel construction projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Works under the supervision of experienced tunnel engineers.

  • Maintains effective communications with the engineering team and clients.

  • Evaluates and characterizes ground conditions and geotechnical parameters.

  • Performs numerical modeling for excavation design and ground behavior predictions.

  • Performs calculations to design excavation support linings and shoring systems.

  • Prepares design drawings and specifications.

  • Prepares technical reports and presentations to present findings and recommendations.

  • Reviews tunnel contractor construction submittals.

  • Observe and report on construction activities and ground conditions during construction.

  • BS in civil engineering, geological engineering, or related engineering discipline.

  • Ability to obtain PE registration within 2-4 years.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Training in the use of geotechnical and structural engineering software.

  • Interest in working in underground excavations on project sites.

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written.

  • Positive attitude, dependability, and commitment to meeting deadlines.

  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently when required.

  • Ability to learn quickly and driven to broaden knowledge base.

  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with a team.

  • Ability to travel for short-term assignments when required, including driving.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in civil engineering, focused on geotechnical and/or structural engineering, with exposure to tunnel design.

  • Master’s degree in geological or mining engineering, focused on geotechnical engineering and excavation design.

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) registration.

  • Experience with numerical modeling and training in numerical modeling software is strongly preferred.

  • 1-4 years of experience in tunnel design.

  • Training and experience with AutoCAD.

  • Practical construction or mining experience is an asset.

  • Experience preparing engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications.

  • Eagerness to contribute innovative ideas to provide solutions to clients.
