Amazon Product Lifecycle Electrical Engineer, DCC Communities, Electrical Solutions Team in Austin, Texas

Description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Amazon Web Services is seeking an electrical engineer to be part of a global engineering team responsible for ownership and continuous improvement related to electrical infrastructure products within our rapidly expanding data center footprint. This position can be based out of Herndon VA, Austin, TX, Columbus, OH, or Seattle, WA and is expected to work from the office a minimum of 3 days per week.

As a Global Amazon Product Lifecycle Engineer (PLE), you will provide electrical infrastructure product life-cycle support to AWS data centers. You will collaborate with the product development team to gain deep understanding of all facets of each product as they are being developed and tested, and then support the product through its operational life. You will be a global ‘go-to’ engineering resource for electrical AWS products deployed in data centers.

The PLE team is an extension of the Principal Engineering (PE) and Product Design Engineering (PDE) teams, assuming global engineering ownership for specific AWS product designs as we begin deploying these products at scale in data centers. PLE responsibilities begin during conceptual planning of new products and ramp during the new product development process. PLE partners with Product Management -Technical (PM-T) early in the product lifecycle to define metrics to measure product performance in the field and develop product serviceability plans. PLE designs and delivers electrical product training and certification for our customers in data center construction, commissioning and operations. Once a product design has matured to the point where First of a Kind (FOAK) units can be manufactured, PLE partners with our product teams to ensure successful completion of factory and field testing. Along the way, PLE gathers and reviews product issues and customer feedback with product teams to drive product design, documentation, settings, installation and commissioning improvements. After FOAK deployments are complete, PLE takes on global engineering ownership, but will engage PE and PDE as needed to address critical issues and approve product design changes. Team activities include product design and documentation management, serving as technical product point of contact for ongoing product testing, technical support for construction, commissioning, and field engineering teams, settings management, technical support for Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and new region launch, and product performance reporting.

PLE goals are high product reliability and availability, agility, and reduced costs for our customers. PLE requests feedback from product customers to understand areas for improvement and then prioritize new feature requests, documentation updates, and product and process improvements to maintain customer trust. PLE is data driven, monitoring equipment maintenance and failure data, identifying failure trends, and troubleshooting to determine root causes of failures.

We are looking for engineers with hands on electrical infrastructure design and product development experience. If you can design electrical systems, have an understanding of the critical equipment needs for a data center, and understand the manufacturability of varying designs you may be a good fit. You should be capable of understanding equipment specifications and evaluating the merit of design changes.

Amazon has a global presence. Travel will be necessary, will be intermittent and should be expected to reach up to 50%. International support will be part of the job, and some international travel may be necessary. Your contribution could consist of leading international projects and could require developing engineering information packages.

Key job responsibilities

• Possess strong engineering judgement and are able to provide recommendations despite uncertainty

• Collaborate with other disciplines such as mechanical engineering, reliability, operations, and compliance

• Are detail and data oriented

• Have experience engineering data center projects and/or products

• Review, update, and approve equipment submittals

• Work with global electrical equipment suppliers and manufacturers

• Build trust and relationships with different stakeholders (e.g. operations, design)

• Work on concurrent projects, in multiple geographic zones

• Understand and explain complex systems in clear and concise language

• Support Operations including failure mode and root cause analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting support, and operating procedure review.

• Listen to the voice of the customer to understand if there are improvements that can be made to increase product reliability or availability

• Work with global supplier and manufacturers to design product improvements, and to oversee root cause analysis

• Contribute to our global body of knowledge and drive a cycle of continuous improvement at a global scale

If you meet these qualifications, exude passion, and enjoy the challenge of innovative projects at hyper-scale, this job is for you!
