The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP), Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research (PSHOR) has an opening for aDirector, Pharmacylocated at Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville, MD.The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for overseeing the pharmacy department and reports to the Executive Director of the Mental Health Program. * *Founded in 1797, the Spring Grove Hospital Center is the second oldest, continuously operating psychiatric hospital in the United States. Operated by the Maryland Department of Health, the hospital is a 397-bed psychiatric facility serving involuntarily committed and forensic patients. This position is responsible for compounding and dispensing medications and pharmaceuticals to patients and performs other related pharmacy services. Established in 1841, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy (UMSOP) is the fourth oldest school of pharmacy in the United States. The successful candidate for this position will be able to describe and demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness as well as how they contribute to a respectful, positive workplace. * *PRIMARY DUTIES * Direct all pharmacy activities, including clinical services, performance improvement, dispensing, and the purchasing, receipt, and storage of pharmaceuticals. Collaborates with upper-level administrators and other directors within the business unit and throughout the campus in order to ensure the deliverance of high-quality pharmacy services and safe, effective and appropriate medication treatment. * Prepare medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders. Detect therapeutic incompatibilities. Dispense medication by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals. * Develop, recommend, and implement policies and procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, disposal of hazardous waste drugs, maintenance of inventory, and record keeping to meet the changing needs and requirements and enforce standards. * Partner management on a regular basis in setting strategic goals/objectives and budgets, and/or in fostering improvements in policies/procedures for the entire department. * Consult with and advise medical staff regarding drugs and pharmaceuticals. * Direct all aspects of departmental functions in order to maintain their efficient operation. * Direct performance improvement processes related to medication treatment including medication use evaluation, adverse event monitoring and medication error monitoring. * Direct program development and improvement initiatives and a member of multidisciplinary committees or teams. Communicate with prescribers to obtain clear prescriptions by confirming the dosage and formulation to ensure patient's safety. Collaborate with physicians to discuss drug options and incompatibility issues with patient prescriptions. * Ensure efficient recruitment/interviewing and training functions to continually review strengths and weaknesses in maintaining a staff of well-trained, highly involved, and motivated employees. * Direct the stocking and inventory of drugs. Ensures drug rotation and removal of expired drugs from inventory. * Maintain and nurture effective communication and partnerships by conferring with business unit and campus leadership on issues pertaining to the promotion and understanding of the departmental functions. * Develop and maintain pharmacy department's budget, including cost containment and guarantee the efficient and effective operation of the pharmacy. * Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education:Bachelor's degree in pharmacy. Doctoral degree in pharmacy (PharmD) preferred. Experience: *Seven (7) years spent progressively building a background in the various pharmaceutical departmental functions. *Supervisory Experience:Two (2) years of experience in a management/leadership role. Certification/Licensure:Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist (BCPP) or Board Certified Geriatric (BCGP) or eligibility preferred. Other:Current Maryland licensure in good standing to practice as a pharmacist or a federal district licensure where the work will be performed upon hire.
