Talen Energy is looking for candidates to fill job openings for Plant Technician-Fuel. This position will be located at the Brandon Shores Power Plant in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). The Brandon Shores Plant is a fully scrubbed coal-fired generating station. This position reports to the Production Supervisor.

The expected salary range for this position is $75,000.00 to $100,000.00 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s Short-Term Incentive program.

Primary Purpose & Summary:

The Plant Technician-Fuel operates and maintains various types of fuel handling equipment associated with the unloading and reclaiming of fuel and the disposal of coal combustion products. Equipment maintained and operated may include barge unloaders, stacker/reclaimer, bulldozers, conveyor belts and associated auxiliary equipment. Additionally, operates and maintains various types of coal combustion by-products (CCB’s) such as fly ash, bottom ash and gypsum unloading equipment. Maintaining of equipment includes inspecting, troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical system problems or if problems are complex, seeks/recommends additional resources.

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs the safe and efficient operation of fuel handling equipment, such as bulldozers and loaders, unloading and reclaiming conveyor systems, barge unloaders, and stacker/reclaimers.

  2. Performs maintenance on all the various types of fuel handling and CCB equipment associated with the unloading and reclaiming of fuel and the disposal of coal combustion products by:

• Visually inspecting equipment for stress and wear

• Changing fluids and parts as necessary and required

• Testing operations as necessary and required

• Initiating orders for regular equipment services and ensuring service is appropriately completed

  1. Performs minor mechanical or electrical repair or modifications on equipment or initiates requests for specialized internal or external resources to perform necessary and required repairs or modifications.

  2. May work in baghouse compartments making bag replacements and minor repairs as well as tensioning of bags.

  3. May perform other fuel handling duties, as needed.

  4. Performs all duties in compliance with the company’s safety and environmental programs.

Skills/Competencies:

  1. Ability to work with bulk materials such as coal, dirt, ash, gravel and coal combustion products.

  2. Ability to effectively work as a team member and communicate orally and in writing.

Education & Experience Required:

  1. A minimum of 2 years of experience in the safe operation of fuel handling equipment, associated with the unloading and reclaiming of fuel and the disposal of coal combustion products.

  2. Previous experience or working knowledge in mechanical and electrical maintenance, repair or mechanical modifications as it relates to fuel yard handling equipment.

  3. Experience in an industrial environment, with a willingness to take initiative and has an understanding of the value of multi-tasking, teamwork, flexibility, and stewardship.

  4. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook, Excel and Word.

Licenses/Certifications Required:

  1. Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license that meets company standards.

  2. Ability to effectively meet respirator qualifications.

  3. Satisfactory results with respect to the background investigation pursuant to the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) requirements, if applicable.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

  1. Ability and willingness to walk, climb, and lift up to 50lbs.

  2. Ability and willingness to work outside in severe weather conditions.

  3. Ability to work frequent overtime and/or weekends on short notice. This position requires rotating shift schedules, which routinely involve weekend and overnight duty. Shifts swap between day and night work during the course of a 5 week rotation.

  4. Willingness to work in an environment consisting of coal and various fuels, CCB’s, heavy equipment, dust, heights and a marine environment.

  5. Ability to work in confined spaces and use a respirator.

At the Power Plant facility, must be able to work in adverse conditions that may include, but not be limited to the following:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Must be able to lift 45 pounds overhead and 50 pounds from the floor to 36 inches.

Must be willing to travel to other facilities if needed.

Must be able to work around high voltage.

Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments.

On occasions employee may be required to work at heights to collect samples or conduct other environmental assessment, where guarding or fall protection is required.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to ensure the safe operation of various types of equipment and maintain awareness of surrounding areas. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.

Work Environment:

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration.

Exposure to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; and may be regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat dust, snow or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals.

Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur in the power plant or other locations where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
