Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

Whiting School of Engineering's mRNA Innovation Center is seeking a Research Technologist who will be directly involved in the manufacturing of pre-clinical grade mRNA and RNA molecules. This will involve cloning of DNA templates, preparation of DNA templates for enzymatic reactions. Synthesis of mRNA according to defined protocols and purification of mRNAs following synthesis. These will be wet laboratory tests, experiments, and equipment maintenance by following established protocols or with appropriate instruction. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the laboratory. The candidate will also coordinate financial and lab administrative activities. These activities include submission and reconciliation of laboratory purchases, management of safety documentation, and assistance with writing SOPs and other standard laboratory documentation.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall laboratory maintenance.

  • Ensures laboratory efficiency by following set protocols for lab cleanliness, organization and safety regulations.

  • Performs wet lab tests and/or experiments following established procedures or protocols.

  • Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments; records data; maintains and makes necessary adjustments to equipment using standard lab procedures and SOPs.

  • Identify and report problems in completion of routine lab processes.

  • Careful record keeping of sample information and results to guarantee quality of experimentation.

  • Coordinates and tracks laboratory purchases, inventory of common supplies, and ensures spending on budgets is accurate and timely in accordance with established policies and procedures.

  • Coordinates with financial staff to reconcile and track lab purchases. Assists in preliminary review of accounts in preparation of quarterly review.

  • Facilitate the team in computational analysis of experimental results and genomic analysis.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Proficient in chemistry.

  • Have a strong understanding molecular biology.

  • Have experience working in a molecular biology lab.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Materials Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field strongly preferred.

  • Related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY (Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: 37.5 hrs/wk, M-F
