The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science operations center for NASA’s flagship observatories. Our world-class astronomical research center is based on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland (Click here to learn more about our missions (https://www.stsci.edu/what-we-do) ). This position is hybrid and will support working from home part-time. Candidates must reside in our in our area or relocate to be able to report on-site when needed (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).

This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.

The Data Management Division (DMD) is seeking an experienced Senior Cloud Software Developer to help design and develop on-line platforms, software tools, and standards for astronomical data.

The Role

The team leads the development of novel data management platforms (based on JupyterHub) to support the science of the astronomy community and migrating legacy data pipelines and analytics workloads to the public cloud.

You will work in a cloud computing environment to maintain STScI’s position as a world leader in the development of high-quality software and science ready data products for astronomy to support astronomers around the world. You will work with a team of software developers and astronomers to deliver critical science products, data processing tools and cloud-based

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop scalable, reliable, and secure AWS native cloud applications

• Develop infrastructure configuration as IaC using technologies such as Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.

• Implement CI/CD/CT pipelines to build, deploy and testing, native cloud application code.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

You’re a creative, highly motivated, engaged and driven Cloud Engineer looking for an exciting opportunity to advance state-of-the-art data management services. You have experience designing and securing applications by incorporating cloud architecture best practices, infrastructure as code, and automation to deploy high-quality services in an AWS cloud environment. You thrive in an environment that offers you significant freedom to develop novel solutions but you also have a proven commitment to excellence. You may have experience with scientific programming and the Jupyter ecosystem, data archives, or working with cloud data storage management.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Software Engineering or a relevant field with a minimum of 8 years working experience in an AWS Cloud environment .

Required Skills:

• Expertise in cloud-native application development, containerization (Kubernetes), and cloud infrastructure management.

• Strong experience with AWS and proficiency in Python, Java, Node.js, BASH, and IaC tools like Terraform and CloudFormation.

• Proficient in building automation tools and CI/CD/CT pipelines using platforms like Ansible, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and CodePipeline.

• In-depth knowledge of AWS services (EC2, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, API Gateway).

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary range - $130,000 -$150,000. Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.
