Johns Hopkins University Teaching and Training Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Teaching and Training Specialist . Reporting to the Whiting School of Engineering’s Director of Gateway Computing with a dotted line to the Krieger School of Arts and Science’s Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, this Teaching and Training Specialist position supports the education mission of the Whiting School of Engineering by performing and coordinating the development and administration of training programs where the graduate and undergraduate programs intersect. This position will oversee over 50 undergraduate and graduate Course Assistants (CAs) hired for the Gateway Computing and Bootcamp courses each year. Additionally, this position includes evaluation, creation, and supervision of training for CAs. This position requires coordination with faculty to develop the administrative tools and data systems for strategic planning that advances the Department's undergraduate experience for the students, faculty, and the department.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Training (40%)

  • Prepare, analyze, and disseminate self-evaluations from instructors and CAs and meet in small groups with instructional team members.

  • Gather and analyze data from evaluations to assess strengths and challenges and tailor individual teaching support for instructional team members.

  • Identify and evaluate specific areas in need of development in the training of course assistants and work with instructors to establish best practices to address these needs.

  • Design and present educational modules providing recommendations and resources to instructors.

  • Evaluate effectiveness of training programs and recommend changes in cooperation with evaluation experts at the CTEI.

  • Support instructors in organizing and running weekly instructional team meetings.

  • When needed, observe CAs in classrooms multiple times per semester up to 6 hours total.

  • Assist with orientation session for course assistants.

Manage Undergraduate and Graduate Course Assistants (40%)

  • Recruit CAs by developing a pool of candidates, soliciting input from faculty to identify strong students interested in the position.

  • Work with the departmental payroll representatives to facilitate the hiring, onboarding, and orientation of course assistants.

  • Develop and deliver an orientation session for course assistants

  • Assign and schedule course assistants; coordinate absences and replacements. Approve timesheets.

  • In conjunction with faculty, help develop and maintain tutoring and supplemental instruction materials.

  • Coordinate supplemental instruction groups, instructional team learning communities, and placement tests.

Communication and Data systems (15%)

  • Maintain the schedules and other electronic sources for course students.

  • Liase with partner offices (Academic Support and Office of Student Success) to ensure alignment of training, time and expectations for tutors and supplemental instructors.

  • Liase with key partners to maintain data systems and records of assignments, assessments, retention, and survey responses across and between courses and sections.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in education, engineering, computer science, or a related fields.

  • Three year's experience in training, education and/or administrative-related setting.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with at least one of the following programming languages is strongly preferred: Python, Java or MATLAB.

  • Master’s degree in education, engineering, computer science or a business-related field is also preferred.

  • Classroom teaching and/or teaching coach experience is strongly preferred.

Starting Salary Range: Min $62,300 - Max $109,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
