Penquis, a social services agency serving Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties for 50 years, is currently seeking a full-time Housing Navigator within our Housing & Energy Services Department. This grant-funded, benefits-eligible position (40hrs, 52wks per year) will serve the counties of Knox, Waldo, Penobscot, and Piscataquis. As the Housing Navigator you work with Department Management, a team of colleagues and partner organizations to support individuals and families that are homeless or at risk of homelessness to find stable housing.

This is a hybrid position working out of our Bangor office, this position will be focused in the Penobscot and Piscataquis county area.

Location: Bangor, Maine

Housing Navigator Responsibilities:

  • Assist individuals/families locate housing, complete the rental process and maintain stable housing for a minimum of one year after the lease is up.

  • Work with municipalities, cities and towns, public housing authorities, CAAs, health care centers, emergency shelter providers, faith-based organizations, and other local organizations that assist families with housing, to develop a referral process for families that need assistance in obtaining housing.

  • Develop Housing Stability Plans, working with each family to identify their housing goals and barriers, search and locate appropriate housing, and navigate the leasing process.

  • Assist participants in completing rental applications, negotiating with landlords, navigating the leasing process, connecting utilities, and moving in.

  • Work in a fast-paced environment, work independently and adjust priorities as needed.

Housing Navigator Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree in the social services or related field, 3 -5 years’ work experience working directly with clients.

  • Able to work flexible hours.

  • Travel is required throughout the four-county service area, with travel reimbursement.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Computer proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet programs.

  • Valid Maine Driver’s License and insured, reliable transportation.

  • Upon hire and periodically thereafter, must comply with Penquis background check requirements with satisfactory results as outlined in current contract provisions.

The starting rate of pay for the Housing Navigator – Tenant Engagement position is $20.34 per hour and additional compensation may be given consideration with relevant experience.
