UIC Science seeks a temporary facilities maintenance technician to maintain and improve the condition and functionality of our business premises. The maintenance technician will be responsible for keeping the facilities operating and executing preventative or corrective maintenance throughout the facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Inspecting buildings, equipment, and systems to identify any issues.

  • Respond quickly in the event of an emergency, notify appropriate personnel and follow safety protocol.

  • Perform manual repairs when necessary (fix locks, replace windows etc.).

  • Perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical repair, and maintain grounds including trash pick-up and snow removal.

  • Developing and implementing preventative maintenance procedures.

  • Maintain heating and plumbing systems to ensure functionality.

  • Inspect alarm systems such as carbon dioxide and fire protection and quickly schedule repairs when needed.

  • Effectively communicate with supervisor regarding building or safety concerns, planning, and scheduling repairs.

  • Attend to minor questions or concerns from guests.

  • Maintaining the inventory records for equipment and supplies.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

  • Strong understanding of general maintenance processes and methods.

  • Working knowledge of tools, common appliances and devices.

  • Excellent manual dexterity and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Well-organized and have the ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Ability to adhere to and ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed at all times.

Qualifications

  • Required Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.

  • Certificate in building maintenance technology or relevant field is preferred.

  • Must possess current Alaska Driver's License, preferably a Commercial Driver’s License.

  • At least one year’s experience in the North Slope Region and with facilities maintenance and operations. Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk regularly; handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Environmental Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.

  • The employee will be frequently exposed to high, precarious places and extreme cold.

  • The employee will be occasionally exposed to fumes; airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and vibration.The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Authorized Driver Requirement: Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UIC Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
