Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, natural sciences, or closely related field, and four (4) years of experience in wildlife management, ecological research, environmental education, or closely related field, two (2) years of which must be at a supervisory/management level.

Duties Description Located along an original section of the Appalachian Trail in Bear Mountain State Park, Trailside Museums and Zoo was founded in 1927 as one of the nation’s first self-guided nature trails focused on local ecology, geology, and history. It began with an innovative founding vision: “the best way to learn about nature is to be in nature and the best way to enjoy nature is to have a friendly, knowledgeable voice as your guide”. For nearly 100 years, Trailside’s dedicated staff has welcomed park visitors to this unique educational facility over-looking the Hudson River in New York’s Hudson Valley, distinguished as the only zoo within the NY state park system. The Supervisor of Trailside Museums & Zoo is responsible for managing the thirty-acre Trailside facility within Bear Mountain State Park featuring local animal exhibits, four museums, native plant gardens, hand-painted educational signage, and a half-mile of walking paths, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. The Supervisor also oversees 4-5 seasonal Regional Nature Museums in nearby Harriman State Park and the Rockland Lake Nature Center in Rockland Lake State Park. Duties include:- Managing operations at the Trailside Museums and Zoo, including the annual budget, staff assignments, staff hiring, and ongoing program areas. These include zookeeping, education, exhibit curation, office and administration, and maintenance and grounds.- Supervising permanent and seasonal staff in respective programs areas. Supervision extends to volunteer coordinators of Trailside’s volunteer programs.- Preparing and justifying budget submissions, staffing, supplies, and maintenance requests.- Overseeing curation of the facility’s buildings, grounds, exhibits, signage, archives, and collections.- Planning and implementing maintenance and improvements, including larger capital projects.- Managing operations at 4-6 Regional Nature Museums in Harriman State Park, a program entering its 105th year, and the Rockland Lake Nature Center, through supervision and oversight of support staff.- Supervising and coordinating Trailside’s volunteer programs, including the Palisades Interstate Park League of Naturalists (PIPLON) and Native American Site Stewards.- Responding to information requests and providing public outreach, including presentations to outside organizations. - Developing and securing grants, donations, and internships to assist program areas.- Collaborating with other park facilities and partner organizations, including the Palisades Park Conservancy, to advance Trailside’s mission.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:Trailside is open 7-days a week, year-round, excepting Thanksgiving and Christmas day. The position requires availability on holidays and weekends. Must communicate well and work effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
