Department Summary:

MITRE Lab’s Energy, Environmental, Material and Chemical Sciences serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of our customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse employees. Your future colleagues are a collegial team of chemists, energy and environmental engineers, material scientists, systems engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, physicists, and civil engineers who work across MITRE’s diverse sponsors and partners.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Work on a variety of chemistry related projects for a range of MITRE sponsors performing basic and applied research, informing sponsors as to current and future applications and capabilities, and devising new solutions for sponsor challenges.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary experts from across MITRE, our customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in chemistry and chemical sensing or associated technologies.

  • Frame and communicate technology performance to sponsors.

  • Develop internal or external research programs that benefit MITRE’s sponsor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience in Chemistry or related fields; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • Deep technical expertise in chemistry or related fields.

  • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.

  • Ability to pivot quickly and work independently or with a team.

  • Ability to design and conduct experiments.

  • Desire to develop new proficiencies.

  • The ability to work in a collaborative environment with both internal and external researchers.

  • Critically think and proactively guide research and troubleshooting.

  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a DoD S clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Top Secret Clearance

  • DHS S&T Suitability

  • DOD experience in CBRNE Defense

  • Experience with water-based pollutants (ie. Microplastics, PFAS, etc.)

  • Risk and supply chain assessments related to chemical industry

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with government sponsor and grow work programs

  • Chemical sensing with commercial off the shelf systems or novel sensor development expertise

  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and solve complex problems with chemistry

  • Develop SOPs and review characterizations of novel materials or pharmaceutical products.

  • Proven background in experimental design and analytical analysis.
