We are seeking a Laboratory Technician at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD

This is a long-term contract position which offers:

TASKS/SERVICES . The contractor shall:

  1. Receive, process and track samples from the NIH Undiagnosed Disease Program (UDP); use UDPICS and FreezerPro.

  2. Ensure proper specimen collection including handling, labeling, processing, transportation, electronic archiving, and storage of specimens.

  3. Perform DNA, RNA, RBC and buffy coat extraction and quantification.

  4. Perform genotyping using multiple platforms, gene expression constructs.

  5. Archive serum, plasma, CSF and urine cell pellets.

  6. Perform experiments on samples according to protocols.

  7. Work with staff on the maintenance of laboratory cell lines.

  8. Perform sample preparation for lab assays, collaborations, and clinical testing.

  9. Send out UDP samples to collaborators; retrieve samples from other UDP laboratories and facilities. This includes one-time shipping training which will be provided by the NIH.

  10. Maintain laboratory equipment and organize stored samples in room temperature and frozen storage.

  11. Monitor and provide assistance to maintaining external sample storage facilities; assist in the management of the internal freezers.

  12. Coordinate with nurse practitioners, research nurses and outpatient phlebotomy staff to pick up samples including skin biopsy, blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid.

  13. Pick up muscle biopsy, CSF, blood, and skin biopsy samples from sites of sedated procedures and deliver to Department of Laboratory Medicine or Bldg. 50 lab.

  14. Perform collection, barcoding and transportation of research samples (skin biopsies, research blood, cerebral spinal fluid and urine) to Building 50 lab

  15. Prepare summaries an reports based on data and specimens.

  16. Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory.

  17. Monitor lab supplies and notify staff when replenishment is needed.

  18. Maintain and update logs for maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

  19. Perform procedures with, and maintain FlexStar, QiaCube, centrifuges and microscopes

  20. Troubleshoot assays and adjust scientific methodology to correct problems or deficiencies in a laboratory project.

  21. Monitor and inventory routine laboratory supplies; ensure that supplies are stocked and organized.

  22. Maintain laboratory reagents in a manner consistent with NIH UDP CLIA protocols.

  23. Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.

  24. Coordinate general laboratory maintenance, including equipment upkeep and calibration.

  25. Communicate with equipment vendors to troubleshoot instrumentation problems.

  26. Prepare, send and receive Remote Kits for local blood draws on UDP patients and their families.

  27. Organize and deliver supplies needed during sedated procedures including dry and wet ice, liquid nitrogen, MNG CSF collection tubes in coordination with the clinical teams.

  28. Prepare summaries an reports based on data and specimens.

  29. Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules.

  30. Coordinate general laboratory maintenance, including equipment upkeep and calibration.

  31. Comply with training and documentation requirements for NIH UDP CLIA (clinical testing) laboratory.

  32. Participate in the development of laboratory procedures.

REQUIREMENTS . The contractor must have:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Biology or relevant fields

  2. CAP Certified Clinical Laboratory

  3. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)

  4. Experience in a CLIA or CAP certified clinical laboratory

  5. Demonstrated background knowledge, experience and proficiency in skills required for proper specimen collection, including handling, labeling, processing, transportation, electronic archiving, and storage of specimen

  6. Skills required to implement quality control procedures of the laboratory

  7. Knowledge, awareness, and skills required to assess, evaluate and verify patient sample quality, through established quality control procedures

  8. Skills required for proper instrument use

  9. Skills required for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures, working knowledge of reagent stability and storage

  10. Ability to evaluate and verify patient sample quality, through established quality control procedures

  11. Skills required for implementing and performing standard laboratory procedures for DNA and RNA extractions

  12. Strong communications skills, both oral and written

  13. Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills

  14. Strong interpersonal skills

  15. Experience in Software such as: Outlook, Excel, Word
