St. Luke's University Health Network Laboratory Scientist - Molecular (PT, Evenings) - Bethlehem, PA in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

The Laboratory Scientist performs waived, moderate and highly complex Molecular laboratory tests. Assumes responsibility for specimen receiving and handling, teaching/training new employees, problem-solving and quality control. Performs special assignments as delegated.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs laboratory tests according to established protocols as designated by supervisor.

  • Interprets physician laboratory orders to assist in appropriate test selection. This includes tests performed on-site and referral tests.

  • Researches referral laboratory specimen requirements for collection, handling, storing and shipping laboratory specimens.

  • Accurately transcribes test results or enters results into laboratory information system.

  • Follows established policies regarding proper documentation of critical values, reagent lot numbers and other quality assurance data.

  • Assumes responsibility for problem solving, teaching of students and/or new employees, quality control and instrument maintenance.

  • Troubleshoots instrumentation with the aid of consulting technical services with proper documentation.

  • Keeps adequate inventory. Orders supplies appropriately to ensure there is limited or no waste due to expiration of products.

  • Assists in method evaluation and technical writing.

  • Organizes and prioritizes daily workload to complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion. Handles multiple assignments as necessary, with an ability to adapt to changes.

  • Serves on various laboratory committees.

  • Demonstrates competency in assigned areas of responsibilities.

  • Attends continuing education or training sessions to meet minimum standards of accrediting agencies.

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively and asking pertinent questions.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting up to 7 hours per day - 2 hour increments. Standing up to 5 hours per day - 2 hour increments. Walking - up to 7 hours per day - short increments. Frequently uses fingers to manipulate small vials, pipetting, etc. Continuous use of hands for operation of laboratory equipment and computer keyboard. Occasional lifting of boxes/equipment up to 30 lbs. Occasional pushing/pulling of equipment. Frequent stooping, bending. Occasional crouching. Frequent reaching above shoulder level and stretching across work area (30" depth). Hearing as it relates to normal, high and low frequencies. Seeing as it relates to general, far, near, color and peripheral vision. Depth perception. Ability to palpate veins.

EDUCATION:

Must meet requirements of 42 CRF 493.1489 Standard Testing Personnel qualifications: Have earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution (accreditation is verified on websites of accrediting commissions on higher education such as https://www.msche.org).

NOTE-Added associates degree in medical laboratory science preferred in addition to bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science.

Must meet requirements of 42 CRF 493.1489 Standard Testing Personnel qualifications.
