To provide training for students, staff and visiting researchers on scanning electron microscopes (SEMs), electron microprobe, x-ray microanalysis through both X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (XEDS) and Wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS), electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) analysis and sample preparation instruments. Support research efforts through advice on applications of electron microscopy, x-ray microanalysis and EBSD techniques. Help expand the user base of these instruments among Lehigh as well as external users in academia and industry. Administer maintenance, evaluation and calibration procedures for scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, EBSD and x-ray microanalysis instruments. Provide electronics, vacuum, pneumatic and mechanical expertise in the repair and modification of electron microscopes and other instruments within the IFMD when necessary.   1. Support Materials Characterization Facility within the Institute for Functional Materials and Devices with training and technical expertise in SEM.

Instructs students, staff, and visiting researchers on operation of scanning electron microscopes (SEM), electron microprobe, x-ray analyzers (XEDS and WDS), EBSD and sample preparation equipment. Advises students, staff members and visiting researchers on applications of scanning electron microscopy, x-ray microanalyses and sample preparation techniques. Assists with interpretation of micrographs and x-ray spectra. Designs sample holders to accommodate unique samples. Monitors SEM and sample-preparation equipment schedules and maintains schedule sheets.

  1. Assist with electron microscopy facility maintenance and repair.

Provides component level troubleshooting on electronics, vacuum, pneumatic and mechanical systems to facilitate repair of the scanning electron microscopes and supporting equipment. Implements maintenance and calibration schedules for scanning electron microscopes and wavelength dispersive analyzers. Performs routine maintenance and performance evaluations on electron microscopes, electron microprobes and supporting instrumentation.

  1. Assist with Lehigh Microscopy School

Assists with the running of computer-based laboratories during the course. Prepares SEM samples for the labs. Assists in the preparations of accommodations for the temporary housing of vendors instrumentation. Provides assistance with equipment installation and removal.

  1. Help expand the user base of SEM, Microprobe, EBSD and microanalysis instruments

Provide tours of IFMD Materials Characterization Facilities to visitors Provide technical information needed to keep the IFMD-Materials Characterization Facility website up to date Give presentations to potential users to promote the IFMD-Materials Characterization Facility

  1. Selection and supervision of installation of new scanning electron microscopes and au iliary equipment.

Researches equipment on the market which satisfies technical specifications. Acts as part of a team which specifies suitable sets of test specimen to evaluate technical specifications of the instrument. Travels to vendor sites to carry out instrument evaluations. Assists with comparison of results from candidate instruments leading to a final recommendation.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Science or Applied Physics; Master's Degree preferred

Eight or more years of related work experience required; Minimum of 10 years experience is preferred

Working knowledge of scanning electron microscopy techniques, electronics, vacuum technology, pneumatics, precision mechanics, computer hardware, computer software and some basic knowledge of physics and chemistry

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
