Job Description:

The Upward Bound Program (UB) at Binghamton University is one of TRIO's college access and preparation programs funded by the United States Department of Education. Upward Bound is an academic program that helps low-income and first-generation students achieve academic success in high school and prepares them for continued success in the college of their choice.

The Upward Bound Summer Program promotes academic success and college access for first-generation and low-income students by providing a living/learning environment at Binghamton University for six-weeks each summer.

The goals of the summer program are to provide participants with:

  • Experiencing college life in a residential community at Binghamton University

  • Fun social activities/trips to enhance community building

  • Hands-on workshops to enhance academic performance

  • Proactive career exploration and financial wellness workshops

  • College tours and cultural enrichment trips

  • Hands-on credit-bearing high school and college courses with the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming school year and/or recovery credit from the prior school year

During the summer program, Resident Counselors are required to live on the Binghamton University campus with the UB participants. Resident Counselors are primarily responsible for mentoring, academic coaching, general student supervision, and some tutoring of UB students throughout the entirety of the Summer Program. Successful candidates report to the Upward Bound Director, Assistant Director, and Academic Counselors.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend staff training and orientation several days before the summer program.

  • Supervise participants during meals, evening activities, and in-person trips.

  • Live on the Binghamton University Campus while participants are in residence, Sunday-Friday July 7 - August 2. (Housing provided June 23 - August 10)

  • Travel by bus to Philadelphia with participants for our summer trip the week of August 5.

  • Provide one-on-one support to six to ten high school students developing social, emotional, and academic skills

  • Act as a mentor, academic coach, and role model about topics necessary to ensure high school graduation and future success in college.

  • Implement and uphold all university and residence hall policies and UB student code of conduct

  • Plan programs and attend activities for UB students.

  • Help move supplies from storage to residence hall during orientation and back at the end of summer program.

  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have at least a sophomore or junior standing (24 or 56 credits) and have at least a 2.75 GPA

  • Working knowledge of navigating college life and utilizing campus resources.

  • Applicants should have some experience working with low-income, first-generation students; experience working with adolescents is preferred but not required.

  • Available for all dates and times listed below

Additional Information:

Salary: $4,500 for 7 weeks. 40 hours per week as follows:

  • Training June 24-June 28

  • Day Trips July 1-3

  • Residential July 7-August 2 (Sunday evenings through Friday early afternoon)

  • Summer Trip to Philadelphia, PA Week of August 5
