Job Title: Yard Hand

Job Description

A Forklift Operator is responsible for the safe movement of products in the lumber yard. This role focuses on loading and unloading materials needed to rebuild the surrounding communities using mid-size industrial forklifts and manual labor.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload materials for residential and commercial properties, including windows, doors, and wood supplies.

  • Spend 60% of the time loading and unloading materials and 40% operating a forklift.

  • Meet with community members/customers to coordinate the pick-up of bundled materials.

  • Build loads, load trucks, and assist in maintaining an efficient, clean, safe, and well-operated lumberyard.

  • Provide exceptional customer service to contractors and do-it-yourselfers by assisting with material selection and loading.

  • Accurately pull and stage materials for pick-up or delivery to ensure schedules are met.

  • Conduct cycle counts, keep the yard organized, and ensure the correct material is shipped and received.

  • Properly use and maintain all equipment.

  • Commit to continued learning on products, packages, procedures, and more.

  • Follow all applicable safety rules and procedures.

  • Follow all applicable rules and procedures regarding sales and inventory management.

  • Accurately distribute and place all specified building materials as indicated on the order ticket.

  • Ensure pulled product is neatly placed and appears orderly and presentable.

  • Clean up and properly dispose of all debris.

  • Take initiative to complete tasks without being asked.

Essential Skills

  • Order pulling

  • Handling heavy equipment

  • Operating forklifts

  • Picking and general labor

  • Knowledge of all applicable building material products

  • Previous experience in a customer service environment

  • Ability to follow safe methods of transporting materials

  • Knowledgeable, trained, capable, and licensed/certified to operate forklift equipment

  • Computer literacy and knowledge of current office technology

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma (nice to have but not required)

Work Environment

Work is performed in the yard and is exposed to all elements, including rain or shine. In case of snow, safety of the employee is prioritized, and employees may be instructed not to report to work.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Black Mountain, North Carolina.
